"Husband loves his Christmas present!" 2009-12-31
By mom of T.A. cruiser (Cadillac, MI, USA)
My husband is very happy with the blu ray disc/VHS multimedia player. The quality is superb. I'm thrilled that it has the VHS player included. Our videos look well-defined on it. Shopping was a breeze. The former reviews helped. What more is there to say. I'm happy, he's happy.

 "Unfortunately, Going Back" 2009-12-31
By Camera Shy (Baltimore, MD USA)
First, and I believe unrelated to the product itself (although possibly not based on other excellent reviews), the unit was left at our door by UPS in the rain. So, the box was soaked despite being carelessly placed in a plastic bag.

As for the claims of up-conversion, well maybe the rain-soaked box affected the playback capability. DVDs did not playback as well as my old Sony DVD player and VHS tapes played back so horribly bad that they were unwatchable. In fact, some of the VHS tapes like the Titanic included audio artifacts that resembled crackling, popping sounds.

As for the setup, I had this connected to a new Samsung LNB610 52 inch TV using an HDMI cable. Simply disappointing. The idea of this combo unit is great, especially if you have a considerable VHS collection from years past. Unfortunately, the execution (at least with my combination of devices) just fell way short of my expectations. I'm sure blu-ray DVDs play great as others have reported; I was so disappointed with everything else I didn't bother trying. The up-conversion claims are simply unfounded.

Please note this is the first item I have ever returned on any on-line purchase (likely 10 years worth of buying). I can't say enough about how Amazon has handled this. I was expecting the ultimate frustrating experience and to my surprise, they made it as simple as you get. This experience makes me want to buy even more from Amazon and I will. Excellent company who care about their customers. Not many today can boast that.

Pros: Simple concept

Cons: Marginal DVD playback capability and very bad VHS playback capability (at least using the HDMI cable); remote not so great and confusing for the average person; the operation of the system is slow to respond remote commands.

Final Thought: I wonder if the few bad experiences (including mine) are related to the use of the HDMI cable. It may also be impacted by the wet conditions I experienced, however, some of the other lower-end reviews appear to describe the same conditions that I experienced.

"Watching VHS tapes is a real "Blast from the Past"......" 2009-12-23
By WoodyWW (Massachusetts)
I'm one of those people who always thought VHS was kind of a primitive technology, & that the video quality was never that great. When DVD came out, w/in a year or 2, I started replacing favorite films I had on VHS with DVD's & was amazed at the difference in video quality. Plus the difference in weight, & storage space, of DVD's vs. VHS: It's amazing how heavy & space consuming even 60--80--100 VHS tapes are.

However, I had a few classic films on VHS that are expensive to buy on DVD: "Down by Law", "Salesmen", "Shoot the Piano Player", etc. So I bought this unit, & so far every VHS tape has been a huge disapointment in video quality, even worse than I remember. And yes, I am using an HDMI cable to my Toshiba LCD flat-screen. As it's been 12 years since I had a VCR tho, & have been watching DVD's, then HDTV movies on cable, since, I'm not sure if this player is making the VHS tapes look worse than they did on my old VCR, but I don't remember them looking this bad. And I can't explain why a lot of people here love the VHS playback of this unit, while some find the VHS playback "almost unwatchable".

To me, going back to VHS has proven to be like what I'd imagine to listening to "8-Track" audio tapes would sound like after going to CD or SACD. And you start to remember what "rewinding" is like; fairly noisy on this machine, not as loud as a coffee grinder, but close.

DVD playback is excellent. I don't know if my DVD's look "better" than on my old Pioneer DV-525, but that was a very good player for it's time. Build quality & looks are fine, for the $$. A bit plastic-y, but of course you'd pay $500-$1000 & up for a more substantial, "high-end", DVD or Blu-ray player (that wouldn't have a VCR). Lots of flexibility with settings & set-up, & the remote works well.

So I'd give it 4 stars for DVD/blu-ray, 3 for the VCR.

Annyyywaayy......for me, it's made me realize that hanging on to most of my remaining VHS tapes is not worth it, & it won't cost all that much to replace them on DVD if I really want to. But from the reviews, a lot of VHS fans still out there, who really like this player. If you're one of those people who still have hundreds of VHS tapes, & maybe weren't that unhappy with VHS anyway, you may want to check it out. Good luck!

This Panasonic Blu-Ray/VHS Player was easy to set-up. It provides an excellent picture whether Blu-Ray, DVD, or VHS format. I have not used the WiFi capabilities yet, but it appears easy to establish. Very good machine for the money.
