"Won't let you play Special or Bonus Features on HD-DVD Discs!" 2007-09-25
By David Straub
None of your HD-DVD disc's special-bonus features can be played on this unit. ONLY THE MOVIE ITSELF! In fact, the title menu will not even appear when playing an HD-DVD disc.

YOU WON'T LEARN THIS THROUGH THE PRODUCT SPECS!

You can buy a regular $250 HD-DVD Player and it will play all of the features just fine, but this $1,000 unit won't! Go figure. Contacted LG, Customer Service Department, who said that they never obtained permission from Toshiba to allow this unit to play the special or bonus features on you HD-DVD disc.

So all you get for your $30 spent on an HD-DVD IS THE MOVIE...YOU FORFEIT THE INTERACTIVE MENU COMPLETELY!

This is an important detail LG fails to mention when advertising the product. An LG representative responded: "...well, we never said it COULD play the special features-interactive menu...why would we want to advertize that?" INDEED, WHY WOULD THEY WANT TO?

IN SHORT, THIS UNIT IS AN OVERPRICED BLU-RAY PLAYER THAT FUNCTIONS AS A "LIMITED" HD-DVD PLAYER.

Not recommended if you want to use the special/bonus features on your HD-DVD. Buying both HD-DVD and Blu Ray players would make more sense!

"Blu-ray Player that also supports HD DVD" 2007-06-28
By L. Kanthatham (Irvine, CA USA)
My site was the first to give this product a full review back in February. I was impressed with LG for being the first to come out with this hybrid product. If your movie collection is primarily Blu-ray then this is a great buy for you. If it's the other way around, then do not buy this product.

The player does not support HDi interactive menu for HD DVDs. You don't get the whole experience when playing those discs on the BH100. The menu only display text, unlike when you play the same disc on a dedicated HD DVD player.

The player also has problem outputting at 1080p. I thought I was able to achieve this at one point but now I am not so sure. The highest it would go is 1080i.

The DVD upconversion is like opening a box of chocolate -- you never know what you're gonna get. Some good, some bad. I tried Finding Nemo on it and it looked really bad.

One more thing, you can't play audio CDs on this $1000+ high-definition player.

You can check out a full review of this product on my site.

"check out compatibility issues before you buy" 2007-05-18
By BK (Tucson, AZ)
This appears to be a nice unit so far but I was very disappointed to learn that it is not compatible with Sony SXRD tv's (and perhaps others) that accept only 60hz signals for 1080p. With my KDS-50A2000, i will only be viewing in 1080i. Bummer! Still, I suspect the difference is subtle at best and being able to play both BluRay and HD DVD's is a massive advantage.

This is indeed a very fine Blu-ray player. The machine has the stability/reliability of a regular DVD player, and it also loads pretty quick compared to other hi def players. Excellent picture quality too.

The previously review mentions that new 10a model makes this one obsolete, but the 10a is the exact same machine as the 10 - it just comes with the new 2.0 firmware, 5 free movies, and and MSRP of $599.

 "Panasonic Blu-Ray is great" 2007-02-24
By Star Trek Fan 1701 (USA)
I have recently purchased the Panasonic Blu-Ray Player, and have been blown away by its picture and sound. Right off the bat, I downloaded and upgraded the firmware, carefully following the instructions, and it greatly improved the boot up and load speeds for discs. Aside from an poorly-designed cheap-feeling remote, Panasonic has really produced a stand out product here.

My journey into the world of Blu-Ray began with a PS3. I purchased a 60GB PS3 initially to play games and movies, thinking that it was a great bargain - $600 for a fully featured Blu-Ray player and game system. The PS3 locked up three times during playback of "The Guardian". The add-on remote for the PS3 is Bluetooth, which otherwise would be great, but could not be programmed into my Universal Remote, and was extremely counterintuitive to use. There was no upconversion of my existing DVDs (I have a lot, so this was really a downer). The game on the PS3 that I was interested in purchasing (Resistance: Fall of Man) was a 720p title, and so it downconverted to 480p on my 2 year old 73" CRT HDTV.

The online service for PS3 was woefully inadequate compared to the XBOX 360 - very little of interest to download in movies or games.

So I returned the PS3 and bought the Panasonic. I didn't feel that sinking in my stomach at having to return something cool - it was much more like a relief to unload this turkey.

I fretted a little at the cost of the Panasonic, but elected to purchase it after seeing a demo, and knowing that I had a 30 day return window. I hooked it up in less than an hour, and fired it up. A big smile attached to my face when I started watching "Blackhawk Down" on the Panasonic. The image and sound were stellar. Same with "Flyboys". Same with "Stealth". Popped in the "Fifth Element" and expected a crappy picture, but except for some very early shots having lots of dirt, the rest of the film's picture quality handily blew away my Superbit version of the film. I also have the HD-DVD add on to the XBOX 360, and I can not see any appreciable difference between a well mastered HD-DVD (I would cite "Superman Returns" as an example) and a well mastered Blu-Ray.

Have not looked back on the decision with regret - only joy.

Pros:

Astounding Picture and Sound Quality

Great Upconversion of Regular DVDs

True Theater Experience

After upgrading the firmware (1.4), much quicker boot up and load times

Worth twice the price of the PS3

Cons:

Remote should be lighted for this many $$$

Jog wheel TOO sensitive

 "A Quick Look" 2008-03-26

Great picture! After upgrading the firmware, the Philips BDP9000 had no problems playing Blu-ray discs including Pirates of the Caribbean 3. Philips hasn't appeared to keep up with their firmware updates, however, and the recent film SUNSHINE would not play at all. All was not lost, however, since the Philips machine is identical to the Samsung BD-P1000 (except for cosmetics) and Samsung appears to still be releasing regular firmware updates. I was able to update the firmware to the latest release for the Samsung BD-P1000 and play the film fine. Of course my Philips BDP9000 now thinks its a Samsung.

Some darwbacks of the Philips:

- No advanced onboard audio decoding or options

- Pressing STOP will often start the film over from the beginning

- SLOW startup/loading/disc tray opening

- May no longer be supported by Philips

Not too bad of a blu-ray player if you can find one for under $200.. though you may end up spending a lot more on a new receiver if you also want to play the new HD audio formats.

"Won't play my Blue Ray discs" 2008-01-16
By Chris R. Greentree (Boothwyn, PA United States)
I bought this player in June, I did not get a 1080p tv until Dec. The player plays my regular dvd's fine but when I tried a couple of blue ray discs I discovered. 1.The third Pirates Of The Carribien movie would only play the previews and the bonus disc, and 2.The third Resident Evil movie will not play at all. I called Phillips customer care and they sent me another player ( this took 10 days ). The replacement acted exactly the same as the first. After another call to Phillips I was finally told that this was a known problem and they would be getting back to me in a day or 2. I am still waiting for them to resolve the problem.

"The worse dvd player I ever purchase!!!" 2009-02-03
By Marcus Welch
Where can I begin, I purchase the BD-P1000 the day it hit the shelf. That was the start of my horror story. I am a home theatre fanatic and I like the best of the best! I have two Pioneer Elite and I thought the Samsung BD-1000 would fit well with my home theatre system... But I was wrong!! It take forever for the player to start up, several firmware updates and I still have several Blu Ray Discs in my library that still doesn't play. It get frustrating after renting a Blu-Ray movie from BlockBuster or buying them from BestBuys my Samsung BD-P1000 is not able to play them. It's like russian roulette... some play... some don't!!! After several phone calls to Samsung customer service, numerous firmware updates and being repaired (3) times I still have several movies in my library unable to play. So I finally got fed up and went to my local BestBuy store and purchased another Blu-Ray player. Not to mention I have a MX 3000 remote control that control all my components hidden away in the closet. That is programed to my SamSung Blu-Ray player and cost $400 to get reprogrammed I was forced to by another SamSung product. Which works fine 5 star (BD-P2550). To end this review. For the amount of $1000 I have had players $75 that work better. If you ever buy a SamSung product do your research and remember this... SamSung has the WORST customer service I have ever experienced!!!!!

"How to set up and maintain the BD-P1000" 2008-10-22
By Anthony Dragani
This player actually works quite well, once you know how to properly set it up and maintain it. The unfortunate thing is that, right out of the box, it will require a firmware update. Here is everything that you need to know:

- Many of the early reviews complained that it lacked a sharp, truly hi-def picture. That is because it shipped with a faulty programmed video chip. Thankfully, the firmware updates have corrected this problem... it now delivers picture quality comparable to a PS3 (I've compared them on my 50" 1080p TV).

- You will need to update the firmware for it to play the latest releases. This is not particularly difficult. You can find the latest firmware on the Samsung website, under product support. The firmware comes in the form of an ISO image. You will need to burn the ISO image to a CD-R using image burning software. I use DeepBurner, which is a freeware program that you can readily find by doing an internet search. Once you burn the ISO image to the CD-R, you simply place the disc in the player and it will perform the update.

- A number of people have complained that this player, even with the latest firmware, will not play new releases. Actually, in most cases these persons have a "full cache" problem. What this means is that the player's memory has residual java programming hanging around, preventing it from loading some newer java-heavy discs. This is easy to fix. Simply press and hold down on the FF button on the player itself (not the remote). This will clear the cache. You will then need to go into the player's menu and double-check the display settings, as they sometimes change as a result of this procedure. This almost always solves the problem.

- It has been my experience that when the firmware is updated, and the cache is properly cleared, the BDP-1000 will play any movie without a hitch. Using the latest firmware (at the time of this writing, version 1.6), this player works flawlessly. I have yet to encounter a blu-ray disc that it will not play. Considering that I picked this up on clearance for a very reasonable price, I am extremely satisfied. No, it will not display picture in picture video, nor can it handle BD-Live internet connectivity, as do the latest higher-end players. But it will play blu-ray movies with excellent picture quality, which is all that I really need for it do.

"PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COST!" 2008-06-12

I have this player I would strongly state that you not purchase unless you $300.00 to spend what is really a "beefed up DVD player". It won't play any blu-ray discs past March of this year. I have called their "customer service" countless times with no resolution. They will not provide you with any up to date firmware nor any real support. The last rep I spoke to laughed at me. So do yourself a favor and shop for another brand. This is a big waste of money.
