This is indeed a very fine Blu-ray player. The machine has the stability/reliability of a regular DVD player, and it also loads pretty quick compared to other hi def players. Excellent picture quality too.



The previously review mentions that new 10a model makes this one obsolete, but the 10a is the exact same machine as the 10 - it just comes with the new 2.0 firmware, 5 free movies, and and MSRP of $599.

I have recently purchased the Panasonic Blu-Ray Player, and have been blown away by its picture and sound. Right off the bat, I downloaded and upgraded the firmware, carefully following the instructions, and it greatly improved the boot up and load speeds for discs. Aside from an poorly-designed cheap-feeling remote, Panasonic has really produced a stand out product here.



My journey into the world of Blu-Ray began with a PS3. I purchased a 60GB PS3 initially to play games and movies, thinking that it was a great bargain - $600 for a fully featured Blu-Ray player and game system. The PS3 locked up three times during playback of "The Guardian". The add-on remote for the PS3 is Bluetooth, which otherwise would be great, but could not be programmed into my Universal Remote, and was extremely counterintuitive to use. There was no upconversion of my existing DVDs (I have a lot, so this was really a downer). The game on the PS3 that I was interested in purchasing (Resistance: Fall of Man) was a 720p title, and so it downconverted to 480p on my 2 year old 73" CRT HDTV.



The online service for PS3 was woefully inadequate compared to the XBOX 360 - very little of interest to download in movies or games.



So I returned the PS3 and bought the Panasonic. I didn't feel that sinking in my stomach at having to return something cool - it was much more like a relief to unload this turkey.



I fretted a little at the cost of the Panasonic, but elected to purchase it after seeing a demo, and knowing that I had a 30 day return window. I hooked it up in less than an hour, and fired it up. A big smile attached to my face when I started watching "Blackhawk Down" on the Panasonic. The image and sound were stellar. Same with "Flyboys". Same with "Stealth". Popped in the "Fifth Element" and expected a crappy picture, but except for some very early shots having lots of dirt, the rest of the film's picture quality handily blew away my Superbit version of the film. I also have the HD-DVD add on to the XBOX 360, and I can not see any appreciable difference between a well mastered HD-DVD (I would cite "Superman Returns" as an example) and a well mastered Blu-Ray.



Have not looked back on the decision with regret - only joy.

We purchased a Panasonic SC-BT203 Blue-ray home theater system from Costco Saturday January 30, 2010. The packaging was not damaged, and there were no indications it had been previously opened. The packaging excluded all speaker cables, and the connectors in the back of the unit are a proprietary design.



We contacted Panasonic, and they ran us through a series of requirements, including faxing the register tape along with the serial number and other details. We went through this process completely twice, because they said they had no record of our service ticket, even though we read it back to them.



We had Costco Valet service (which we highly recommend) try to contact them and that failed. We will never buy another Panasonic product again. The price of replacement cables on a piece part basis from Panasonic for the 7 missing cables is almost 80% of the cost of the original package.

This is a great blu-ray player and the only one so far to play dvd-audio (now the Oppo does as well for 500 bones), so if that interests you then you are getting a two-for-one deal. This receiver does (contra previous reviews) decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS High Resolution, but not DTS-HD Master. Dolby TrueHD discs like The Dark Knight sound incredible, and of course if a disc has a lossless PCM file (like the first Hellboy or Cars) then this player will pass the lossless sound either over hdmi or the 7.1 analog outputs (this has been confirmed in several forums - the problem is that Panasonic techs do not know what they are talking about). Thus the 7.1 analog outputs are useful for getting the lossless sound of both bds and dvd-audios to older receivers like mine (the exception begin DTS-HD master like Hellboy 2). The picture is great, but the load time is a little slow. Once it gets going, however, the picture and sound are well worth it!

I have owned this product for approximately sixteen months. 'great sound, and picture; but a little slow to turn on and load a disk.



My unit shipped with version 2.3 firmware and recently needed a newer version in order to run newer bluray disks. I had to download from the Japanese website because the North American website did not have the latest version (2.5). The first download froze. The second attempt was going to take six hours so I terminated it. The third attempt took about an hour and a half. Everything went smoothly after this.

I called Panasonic after hours spent on my Yamaha AV receiver (RX-V863) and the BD10AK menus. The problem: I couldn't get my receiver to push Dolby True HD audio, only PCM or regular Dolby Digital through my 7.1 speakers. Although there are Dolby True HD stickers on the unit itself, the manual actually states that if the media has Dolby True HD or DTS-HD as its soundtrack, the BD-10AK will ONLY playback in Dolby Digital.



So which is true?



The result of the phone call: the BD-10AK does NOT push Dolby True HD, nor DTS-HD. This was straight from technician Curtis at Panasonic. So my Yamaha receiver will take the audio signal and try to push it as best as it can - hopefully converting it to True HD on the way out.



I had already loaded the firmware upgrade from the Panny website (pretty easy). Load times are OK (this is my first blu-ray player). The video is GORGEOUS from blu-ray discs - tested Iron man and the 1st Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Upconverted (up to 1080i) DVD playback is great - tested Ratatouille. Outside of some artifacts, I thought it looked better than playing it through my Yamaha DVD player.



One major reason I bought this 2-year old (since introduced to the general public) Panasonic BD player is its DVD-Audio playback; I have a small collection. It plays back in 5.1, and the newer models do NOT play DVD-A's.



Until I upgrade to a PS3 (or whatever Sony is pushing years from now), the BD10AK will do.



Upgrade to 4 stars due to its ability to play my Chinese DVDs.

Own mine now for about a year. No problems and picture is awesome! Viewing on a 1080p Panasonic set. I did update the firmware a few months ago and it helped with loading some BD's. Note that some BD disc will be better quality than others. Not the players fault, just the way they compressed the videos.

The Panasonic DMP-BD10A is a high quality Blu-Ray player. Start up times (once the power button is hit to time disk tray will come out)are as fast as my upconvert DVD player...Much faster than the Sony BDP-S300 I use to own. Also the play times (time from when disk is put into player and see disk contents on the TV) are also just as fast as my upconvert DVD player. Picture quality is out of this world! Cannot comment on audio since I'm still using the speakers on my LCD. I wish I would have bought this player instead of my Sony Blu-ray to begin with. Panasonic certainly put a lot of thought and quality into this machine. My only gripe is the remote could have been better laid out, but really no big deal. Some have complained about the flip-down front panel, but I personally like it b/c it hides all the unsightly buttons one typically sees on Blu-ray players. The panel gives this player a handsome appearance. I highly recommend this Panasonic Blu-ray player!!

This is my first BR player... well actually third because I returned the first two I bought. For better or worse BR requires that you be able to update your firmware for the latest greatest movies. A player without any internet connectivity will require you to download the updates and burn them onto a DVR. Being able to watch Netflix online, play YouTube directly, and plug in your camera's SD memory chip in directly with slideshow viewing support is fantastic. This player connects directly to the internet with a LAN cable, unfortunately a network USB adapter is not supported.

If you Google this problem, you'll see that I'm not the only one. Unit plays regular DVDs fine. Won't play Blue Ray discs anymore after only 18 months. Called Panasonic - they said the warrantee was expired. So now I have a $447.65 DVD player. Thanks for nothing Panasonic - I WILL NEVER BUY ELECTRONICS FROM PANASONIC EVER AGAIN. If you only want a Blue Ray player for 18-24 months, buy this unit. If you want something that will last for your money find another brand.

I formerly owned a Sony BDP s300 for over a year but after reading the many excellent reviews on this unit from CNET and Home Theater, I decided to sell my Sony and cop this fine unit. So far there's been no problem playing discs, BD or Standard, and in fact it does boot up a little faster than the Sony but where it stands out in is the sound quality and picture. I was amazed at the rich sound of this unit when I played "Amadeus-the Director's Cut" in BD on this machine. So far I have not regretted my decision on this purchase. And at just under $200--it's a steal!! One more thing to add that the Sony didn't have, this machine has a memory if you stop it and shut it off---when you turn it back on, it'll go back to where you left off---no bookmarks needed here!!

I think its fair to offer my experience with the 30K. I bought my 30K in Nov 07 when it first was released directly from Panasonic Direct. The player started having serious problems playing BR disks by the second disk. I called Pan's support and they tried to get me upgrade the firmware. Well I did that and it didn't help at all so they had me send it an authorized repair shop half way across the country.



(I was already a little annoyed since effectively they send me a defective unit, they should have ship me a new one and had me ship mine back to them and taken the repair on their shoulders.)



Then I had to jump through hoops to prove that this was all authorized within the first 30 days of owning it as they didn't want to repair it on their own dime. I had called support to log the issue in the first 5 days! I had the RMA within 15 days and the rest was shipping related delays due to the holidays. Eventually they owned up and fixed the unit.



The repair slip said that the transport was bad and was replaced. Fine, but again I was annoyed that I had to spend nearly 3 months without a player when it was clear defective from the get go.



Now, I have had the unit a year and a half, less with it actually working. Its kaput! It won't recognize any disk, be it blu-ray or DVD. Just before this it had given us grief for about a month talking directly to a Pan plasma bought at the same time, both are HDMI-CEC. It would occasionally show only a red picture and after shutting down and restarting a few times it would finally work. The cable was ruled out, as I tested a few and also tested on another player.



Panasonic support hasn't even replied to my email send over a week ago.



Caveat Emptor! I am going to get an Oppo Blu-ray when it is released. Their support is good and their DVD player I own is excellent.

I have owned this for two months and have nothing but good thigns to say about it. Load/start-up time is MUCH quicker than my other blu-ray player (Samsung BDP1400) and from what I have read, much quicker than most blu-ray players. i would say that it takes about 15 seconds to get going, which is not bad at all. The upconversion from SD dvd's is amazing and the Blu-rays look out of this world.



The only complaint I have is that the remote is not backlit and when you are watching TV in the dark it can become annoying.



Overall, I would definitely recommend this player to anyone looking to buy a stand-alone.

This unit is terrible. Takes forever to load a DVD (average 2-3 min). Press Eject - it takes 30-40 sec. to eject a disk. Remote funcions responses are slow, no way to get to main menu quick, FWD buttons are slow responsive, it freezed and went crazy trying to load CRANK 2 blueray. I read a lot of good reviews before I bought this unit. Decided to go with Panasonic because I read the Sony units load forever. After 6 mts I come to the same conclusion as all those people talked about sony. Im putting it up on Ebay. JUNK! JUNK! JUNK! Only good this was that it played 7.1 - but if you look at it - there is hardly no bluerays out there with 7.1 decoding yet.

I like Panasonic products, and bought this Blu-Ray player to use with my Panasonic LCD TV. The player works fine but I would have thought with available technology that a player such as this would be able to instantly detect there is no disc in the tray without first trying to read it. The unit is also slow to power up and the remote control is not intuitive, at least not for me. Opportunities to improve this unit.

When I first read the many early glowing reviews of the Panasonic BD55 Blu ray disc player I was a bit suspicious. So I read reviews of multiple players from other manufacturers. None of them seemed to match the impression made by this particular Panasonic device. So I decided to aquire my own machine...even after the company had made the decision to discontinue this model and replace it with a similiar model with different numbers behind the Panasonic name.

I am not sorry that I made the decision to buy this unit. It performs just as the reviewers had said. Once you make the correct connections (my receiver has 7.1 analog audio input but no HDMI connection) and understand the players internal set-up process you are rewarded with the real pay off. That pay off is a significant augmentation of picture quality (via the HDMI connection to the HD TV) and true lossless audio. The newest High Def audio formats are truely awesome. Even regular DVDs look noticibly better... but still not as good as the blu ray discs.



The investment has been worth it for me so far. My already good A/V home theater system has been 'juiced' by this little panasonic BD55!!

I have joined the ranks of the many early reviewers. My personal experence has made me a believer.





The service from Amazon and the secondary seller that I utilized was exemplary. I'm satisfied. I would have rated this 5 stars. However I reduced my rating by one star because my Owners manual was printed in only French. Fortunately someone on the AV Forum directed me to the Panasonic web site where I was able to download a copy of the Owners Manual in English.

The quality of this Bluray player is outstanding. It straps to the back of the front car seats, which puts the screen at eye-level. It only accomodates one set of head phones. Two would be better. I bought this player the day it was released direct from Panasonic. This is a high quality device. Beautiful hi-rez screen, excellent build quality. The hard-wired internet connection allows you to stream youtube videos and view Pacasa slides in hi-rez. You can also playback DIVX rentals or purchased movies that you download on you PC and write to DVD. You can also update the firmware from the WEB.

I have been able to watch movies in the car with the 3 hour battery or the included 12V car adapter. I love the way the screen folds flat against the unit and then able to tilt up or down. All my friends are amazed at the high quality and the bright picture. Way to go Panasonic!!

PS, Panasonic is still trying to get me a date for the availability of the optional 6 HR. Battery.

The performance of this thing is amazing for the price point which why I gave it 5 stars. It is not the best player but it costs less than half what the best costs and does everything I need done.



I have been waiting a while to join the Blu-Ray era because I have hundreds of standard definition (SD) DVDs that I still watch a lot and the new player had to be able to play them at least as well as my trusty Panasonic S-97 (which was the best HDMI up converting DVD player for less than $200 five years ago). Virtually all of the reviews less than a year ago for all the Blu-Ray players said the up conversion of SD DVDs was poor except for the new Oppo ($400).



Well, the Panasonic BD-60 and 605 does a better job according to both DVE

(Digital Video Essentials) and the HQV Benchmark DVDs. And so does my semi-calibrated eye ball on SD DVDs some of which are hard to make look good! This thing has significantly better color balance, jitter elimination, etc. than the S-97 so I would have no problem using this player for all DVDs except for a few human interface issues (see the cons below).



One note for setting up for playing SD DVDs, I found that forcing the output to 1080p 24Hz, gave a noticeable "smoother" presentation with a very de minimus reduction in sharpness.



I expected the Blu-Ray performance to be very good and it was. It did not disappoint. As has been commented in other reviews the response time is noticeably longer than a regular DVD player but I can live with for the price.



Unlike as reported in another review, mine does remember where you stopped viewing the current DVD played whether you just stop, turn off the player or even removed the DVD. Obviously it does not remember if you load another disc.



Pros:



Plays SD DVDs much better than expected and plenty good enough even for a 65" TV!



If you know anything about regular DVDs and HDMI, it is easy to physically install.



This player will simultaneously output HDMI, component and composite video with audio (obviously at different resolutions and number of channels). This could come in handy if you send additional signals to other devices such as other TVs or recorders.



Cons:



It is frustrating using the manual to perform the setup. All the information is in there somewhere but reading for comprehension was definitely an iterative process.



So many different buttons for various menus calling up various functions embedded all over the place - some that can be performed while playing but many halt playback while in the menu. In most cases you have to manually command "play" to resume playback even after the last menu is closed.



The direct access (without using menus) to SD DVD titles and chapters is very basic (as in brutally crude). You type in the number for a title when play back is halted and you are in the home screen and for chapters, you type in the number during play but nowhere do you even know what chapter or title numbers exist except by trial and error.



No Position Memory



No Quick Replay



The load and response times are slower than standard DVD players but I knew that going in and expected it and so far the lag time is not annoying but it is noticeable.

I have had this machine for about 6 months and have had no problems with it. I ran into a thing where I couldn't play a new movie, but that was corrected as soon as I hooked the machine to the internet and updates the firmware. To address the other low review about load times, the reviewer is right that it takes a little while to load, but this model panasonic has one of the fast read and refresh times for this range. This is a very good blu ray player that will not disappoint as long as you read the instructions before you complain that it doesn't do what you need it too. Even turning it off and restarting it is easily accopmlished with a favorite marker. Buy it and enjoy. I am purchasing my second unit.

This Panasonic player is just what we need, as we only play the movies. We have played more than 20 Blu-Ray disks without any problems. The unit was plug and play, very easy to connect. The remote control is very well laid out and easy to use. The picture quality on our 62" DLP TV is superior. The sound quality through Harmon/Kardon Dolby 6.1 amplifier is superb as well. Overall we are extremely satisfied with this unit.

Panasonic has always been known to build solid machines-broadcast vcrs (back in the day) that never stopped, cordless phones that survived being dropped, and every sort of electronic device in between. I've always been a fan of how well-built Panasonic stuff is. They are, after all, the makers of the only shock-proof laptop (the Toughbook).



For image quality, I always preferred Sony, and for sound I always preferred Yamaha or Denon. But similar Panasonic stuff always looked and sounded "pretty good". Especially since you could drop it.



That's all changed. Now Panasonic continues to make well-built stuff, and they have the best new Plasmas on the market. After having 3 Sony DVD players die in 7 years, I decided to go with the Panasonic Blu-Ray player, mostly so I could use my TV remote with no hassle.



I have not been disappointed. This player starts up fast, the image quality is simply stunning. I had no problem download firmware. DVD up-conversion looks good too. This player had no problem with moderately scratched DVD's. I haven't seen a scratched BD yet, but I can only image BDs will not work as well scratched, but time will tell.



Honestly, BD Live doesn't interest me, if I want an interactive experience, there are website and youtube. I mean flipping through content with a remote control just isn't the same as using a mouse.



I had no problem getting my player to work with my network. Since the cable modem is hooked up to, well cable, it only made sense to place it near the cable box, so therefore my router was already near the TV. I had no problem receiving a DHCP address from my Airport router.



For the limited content you get from Viera cast, it does work well. I haven't tried watching amazon.com unbox yet, but when I do I will edit this review. There are numerous reviews on VieraCast, this review is about a piece of hardware.



For most people the decision is going to be between Panasonic, Samsung and LG. Panasonic has always skimped features for rugged quality, and this is no exception. VieraCast does not do NetFlix streaming yet, but my 5 year old pc hooked up to my Plasma has no problem.



If you really want some of the advanced streaming features of the LG or Samsung, you probably can't go wrong. But if you have kids or careless adults banging on the disc tray all day, get the Panasonic. It feels very well built.



I highly recommend this player, as it performs its advertised functions faithfully.

...the functionality SUCKS!! It takes forever to read a disc and start the menu, which I guess is a result of the additional information on a BluRay disk, but sheesh... The thing that really irritates me is the fact that when you stop the movie, it does not continue from where you left off! I mean, even my 5 year old Sony DVD player does that!! I sometimes fall asleep in front of movies and pick up where I leave off watching later and this machine will not pick up from where I stopped it. First, it turns itself off after a certain time, and loses all that info. Same for pause; I leave it on pause overnight and next morning the machine power is off and none of the memory is left. I HATE this lack of basic functionality. I'm taking it back and getting a better one after reading the instruction manual. But if you know you will NEVER stop and restart a movie, this is a good machine. Picture quality is excellent, but that's all the good I can say about it. My none-BluRay discs look great as well.
