 "Dissapointed" 2010-01-07
By Jack Ray (NW Georgia Mountains)
I originally purchased a Sony PS3 for playing BlueRay discs. The prices of BlueRay players were at that time in the $500-600 range. Following a few unplayable discs (due to formatting issues) I decided to buy a new BlueRay player...thinking that anything newer than the PS3 would have the correct firmware installed. And YES I tried multiple times to download the newer firmware from Sony's site...ughhh what a pain.

I soon found this not to be the case with the Phillips product. The last 3 BlueRay discs from Netflix also have issues with the firmware on this machine.

I am dissapointed that the DVD industry insists upon issuing discs with firmware that is incompatable with even the newest BlueRay machines...this killed the home version of the Betavision product for Sony and will eventually be the demise of the DVD industry as online viewing is just around the corner for the masses.

Hey DVD producers...HOW ABOUT SHIPPING YOUR PRODUCT WITH THE FIRMWARE ALREADY INSTALLED ON THE DISC?? WHAT A NOVEL IDEA??? DUH!!

Soon I predict that video manufacturers like Samsung et al will produce a fine LED video screen with an imbedded computer capable of downloading and playing video on demand for a few cents per view...right now DirectV is not competitive with netflix, but soon some company will get the message that worked so well for KMart...VOLUME is the key to profits...Video on demand for $.50 per view will have customers beating a path to your door.

Samsung, how about a 46 inch big screen with a built in motherboard and sound card?

Netflix, you already have video on demand, but who wants to watch it on a 15 inch laptop screen??

KNOCK-Knock...that's opportunity calling...Are you listening?

 "Impressive Blu-ray player" 2009-12-26

The Philips BDP5012/F7 Blu-ray player rivals the Big Brand Names. High Definition picture quality is excellent. DVD picture quality is excellent (near HD quality). Sound quality is excellent. Disc load time is very good. Remote control use is very good. On-screen menu provides easy navigation and simple setup. Menu button on the remote allows user to skip movie previews. Resume playback feature works great. The internal fan does a very good job at keeping the player cool. I do not anticipate updating the firmware as this player functions without defect. The Philips BDP5012/F7 Blu-ray player provides quality at an excellent price. No buyer's remorse:)

 "Stylish, quick player" 2009-12-06
By Beth (Fort Wayne, IN)
We actually picked this up at Sam's Club very cheap and have been impressed with the quality. We have an older TV and can only go to 1080i resolution but it seems excellent, I can't imagine the picture being anything but perfect on a new TV with the HDMI cable included. If you aren't concerned about the streaming features, having a wireless connection, or internal memory for BD Live features, you will probably enjoy this as much as we do if you can find it at the price we did (<$100). I don't have anything to compare load time to, but I can't imagine needing it to load any faster. We have absolutely no bugs and are on firmware version 1.000 still.

Besides being a fast loading excellent Blu-ray Player. This machine plays all recordable DVDs, unlike the competition. It is available for a bargain price well under $200. Highly recommended!

"TOP OF THE LINE PHILIPS" 2009-07-11
By Regina A. Walter (Indiana)
This unit is a great unit and is superior to Sony & Panasonic models. First it plays all the DVD recordable formats. It loads DVD and blu-ray very fast. It has 5.1 analog outs as well as HDMI and standard 2 channel audio. It has distance settings for your speakers when using the 5.1 outputs. The image quality is excellent. I have compared it to both top line Sony and Panasonic models and find it superior to both. It is a great buy.
