"Great sound, needs frmware update." 2009-10-01
By Zeke77 (United States)
I bought the Onkyo SP-506 primarily for multi-channel hi resolution audio listening using the 5.1 analog outputs. The 506 employs 3 high end Burr-Brown 1796 DAC's (3 stereo DAC's to handle 6 channel audio, 5 + .1) and really sounds fantastic using multi-channel DVD-A or SACD. There are some issues however that keep it from being a truly stellar unit.

Pros:

- Incredible multi-channel audio sound, especially when taking advantage of the BB1796 analog capability.

Cons:

- Price. Looks like inflation really kicked in with these units. The price is now $150 more than I paid a short while ago.

- No available firmware updates. I have many devices from various manufacturers that are supported very well with down-loadable firmware updates. There hasn't been a single update made available for download.

- Drive noise. There is a definite audible whirring sound with the unit. Can't be certain it affects all units, but mine is a bit annoying. An audiophile would be peeved.

- Fast forward, fast reverse, and pause buttons do not function while playing DVD-A discs that have an interactive menu.

-Cannot adjust video picture controls while watching a presentation. Must stop playback and enter the setup menu to do this. No on-the-fly which is not great IMO. Much cheaper units even have this ability.

Wishlist:

- Better analog control such as adding "channel level" and "crossover setpoint" adjustment

Fortunately because the sound is so good, it's a keeper for me. I'll have to live with the broken features until Onkyo releases an update.

"Great Multi-Format Player for the Price" 2009-06-06
By Mark Sturtevant
I was on the fence with this player, I narrowed my choices down to this Onkyo and a Pioneer Elite DV-58AV and ended up going with the Onkyo since it was lower cost and new (I could only find refurbished DV-58AV's at the time for $100 more). I'm happy to say I was not disappointed with this player. It passes DSD bitstream over HDMI straight to my Onkyo Receiver (TX-SR706) and the sound is as good as my old Sony DVP-S9000ES for SACD's, passing DSD to a my receiver was key to this though as I found that using it's internal DAC's for SACD wasn't as good as Sony ES SACD player. DVD-Audio also sounds very good when using this unit's internal DAC's using the Analog 5.1 channel out, in this case it did sound better than having it pass over HDMI like the SACD's. I actually bought this to only play SACD's & DVD-Audio primarily, which it does very well (especially at this price) so I was pleasantly surprised when I played a DVD in it, the up-conversion is done very well, it even does a better job of up-converting than my BluRay player (Sony BDP-S500) with standard DVD's. If you're looking for a great up-converting DVD player you can't go wrong, If you want to use this as a SACD player I have to say I was impressed when sending the DSD steam to the receiver, as for DVD-Audio I really don't have another player to compare it to, it sound good, not as good as it does with SACD's but much better than the CD versions of the albums. To sum up, this is a great multi-format player for the price, I think the majority of listeners & movie goers would be impressed with the quality and performance.

"Poor Panasonic service after the sale" 2010-02-10
By Mark Holm
We purchased a Panasonic SC-BT203 Blue-ray home theater system from Costco Saturday January 30, 2010. The packaging was not damaged, and there were no indications it had been previously opened. The packaging excluded all speaker cables, and the connectors in the back of the unit are a proprietary design.

We contacted Panasonic, and they ran us through a series of requirements, including faxing the register tape along with the serial number and other details. We went through this process completely twice, because they said they had no record of our service ticket, even though we read it back to them.

We had Costco Valet service (which we highly recommend) try to contact them and that failed. We will never buy another Panasonic product again. The price of replacement cables on a piece part basis from Panasonic for the 7 missing cables is almost 80% of the cost of the original package.

If you get a complete package, I'm sure the quality is good, but if you have a problem like this, service is non-existent. At this point we have a $460 paperweight. Panasonic SC-BT203 1000W 7.1 Channel Blu-ray Disc Home Theater Sound System

"A good little second player" 2010-01-23
By A. Alisago (Georgia USA)
I bought this player last year during one certain websites price SNAFU (sub seventy bucks with shipping)(with big thanks to the "heads-up" from the fine folks at [...]). I bought it as our second Blu-ray player for our bedroom (our first is a PS3 in the living room).

My biggest problem was that certain new Blu-rays did not load past the menu. But I emailed support at [...] and they sent me a link with a new firmware. I downloaded the firmware contents, burned it to a CD, and loaded it up to my Sherwood BDP-5003 in a matter of minutes. Now it works great!

Yep, the remote is rather crappy, but it actually will allow you to adjust the volume without having to find another remote for your TV or receiver (a rather nice feature). Yep, the sound isn't comparable to the high end brands, but for the low price that Amazon offers, it's a good deal. If I found another for less than seventy bucks, I'd definitely buy a few as a gift for a friends/relatives.

"Good Blu-Ray Player, Misleading Specifications" 2009-04-30
By Michael W. DaBose (Kissimmee, FL USA)
I purchased this player elsewhere (suprising I beat Amazon prices). Playback is good and clear. Unlike the box and specifications, this player does NOT have any built in decoders - Dolby TrueHD, DTS Master Audio, or Dolby / DTS anything. The support referred to is the ability to send the encoded signal, via HDMI only, to a receiver with the decoders built in to perform the actual decoding of the signal. If your receiver does not have an HDMI port, or is "pass through" only, this will not work. Note that I am using optical audio and the signal processing supposedly only for HDMI seems to work with this option - contrary to the manual?? - basically PCM 96K, downsampled 48K, or re-encoded DTS.

Overall a good basic (kitchen, secondary use) player with very good 1080p picture. I consider the advertising / specification misleading / false advertising. If the box / specifications states, as this Sherwood Blu-Ray player does, it is DTS Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD, only to find out in the fine detail - in the manual, it simply forwards a signal is very deceptive. Shame on Sherwood. That's kind of like a UPS driver claiming a PhD because he delivered the documents to a graduate. WTH?

I buy and rent movies, usually now on Blu-Ray disc. Usually all I want to do is watch the movie and perhaps a few of the extras. For that mission a player such as the Sherwood BDP-5003 is perfect. It puts out an excellent video and audio signals on the HDMI connnector, and since my AVR can decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD I'm all set. I'm very pleased with this purchase.

I bought two of these units when they first came out (2007?). Firmware up to date (through network connection) but now wont play any newer blu-ray discs (such as "Bruno" or "Taking Woodstock"). No problem playing older blu-ray discs. Samsung not respond to email. I will never buy Samsung again.

Update: Samsung emailed me to suggest I reset the unit (which I had done numerous times) or just wait for the next update!

"This device is NOT worth the packaging" 2009-11-30
By Adam L. Stanley (Chicago, IL)
I have had nothing but trouble with this unit since I purchased it and it only gets worse with time. I was finally able to get a firmware upgrade from Samsung for the 1400 after months of being unable to watch anything new. Now that I have upgraded the firmware, I CANNOT WATCH ANYTHING OLD!!!! I just installed the 090803 firmware upgrade and I am ONLY able to watch bluray discs. Everything else gets spit out as unable to be played. Even when it works, it takes forever to load movies and often just stops in the middle of a movie. DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT. From what I have read, it is better to just buy a PS3.

I've had this player for about 18 months and wish I'd never bought it. It has brought me nothing but headaches. BR discs load really sloooooowly, if at all. Then, once it plays, the disc frequently stops and skips. Firmware is impossible to update, and then the disc still won't play! I've spent an hour tonight trying to play Drag Me to Hell and it won't play. The firmware is up-to-date but it keeps saying "Loading." It never plays. I've had this problem before and hoped a firmware upgrade would help. It didn't biggest waste of money. Avoid this product at all costs!

"HD A-30 an underrated player" 2009-03-26
By Paul F. Gordon
The HD A-30 is a good HD player, although the format did not survive the competition with Blu-Ray. It is a better upsampler of most Blu-Ray players, although you really need to use it with a 1080 P TV. The sound is good, although it only delievers the new HD audio formats in multi-channel PCM, which was a bit disappointing. It sill does Dolby Digital and DTS normally though. It is also a faster loader than other HD players.

"Fire sales make HD DVD a bargain" 2009-03-18
By Quentin (NorthWest)
I bought an HD-A30 nearly a year ago from Amazon's Warehouse Deals for as a refurb. The unit arrived fast and was in new condition with everything in the box including two sealed movies. Some refurbs come in generic boxes but this came in the original box then double boxed for protection. The player was easy to set up and has worked perfectly all this time. It is a beautiful component that looks great next to other home theater gear.

I have since bought over 100 HD DVD discs at excellent prices. Most were from Amazon Marketplace and only a few have given problems. Most of those were used and show some surface scratches or abrasions. When you consider that you're getting HD quality for prices as low or lower than standard DVD it's hard to quit buying this "dead" format!

The fly in the ointment of course is that no new titles are released on HD DVD so you'll have to be content with what was released by the spring of 2008. There were about 600 titles released and quite a few still are available from Amazon or elsewhere for as low as $2 and rarely much over $10 (compare that with Blu-ray titles).

Since Toshiba is not making HD players anymore I bought a second A30 on eBay. It was from an outlet store and was just a bare player with not even the power cord or remote control. There were no other bidders so the auction remained low and I got the player for $37 including shipping. Though this player showed obvious signs of use it works fine and I've put back the unit I got from Amazon as a spare (which makes sense since I have a large library of discs).

It's important to point out that the HD-A30 is an excellent upconverting DVD player. DVDs look great on my 56" 1080p TV, not quite HD but close enough to satisfy most folks. HD DVD may be the dead format but it's 100% compatible with DVD so you can play over 100,000 titles in addition to the 600 HD titles!

I have to tip my hat to Toshiba, it would have been easy to ignore customers who bought HD DVD but they have kept releasing new firmware for all their HD DVD players, even back to the first generation. A few months back version 4.0 was released that seems to have solved issues with earlier firmware. The upgrade process takes about 15 minutes but otherwise is easy to do if you take the time to read the precautions.

Of course my experience doesn't predict what the next person will get delivered. If you buy a Blu-ray player and it's defective you can return or exchange it. If you get a bad HD DVD player or yours goes bad later, then you'll have to scramble to find another.

Overall, this is the bottom feeder's way to view quality HD media on an HDTV and it's allowing me to put off BD until prices come down and better players are released. Later Blu-ray will compete but for now you can get a HD player and discs for about 1/5 the cost! And upconversion to boot, a no-brainer for many on a budget.

"Decent but I found at least one movie it won't play until a firmware update" 2009-07-11
By D. Stewart (Grand Rapids, MI USA)
Bedtime Stories (Plus Standard DVD + Digital Copy + BD Live) [Blu-ray]I've owned this unit for a few months now and it works like it should however I contacted Philips to make aware that the newer release from Disney "Bedtime Stories" will not play the main feature. It gets though the previews but when it starts to load the main feature it sets back to the white screen with PHILIPS in blue screen and repeats the previews. I have the latest firmware update so I'll just have to wait...

Other than that it plays the rest of my collection just fine. I'm very happy with this purchase and understand that their are mishaps like this and thankfully they make firmware updates to address issues like this and the changes to certain formats in blu ray discs. The player takes it loner to load the movies than I'd like but I'm totally aware that there is alot of info on these blur ray discs to process and the clarity is worth the wait. It seems to load longer when you have company over and your both staring at the screen waiting for the movie to begin but really not a big deal. All in all great player. It's quiet when it runs so no distractions or, "what's that loud humming noise" coming from it.

 "Excellent Bluray Player" 2009-02-17
By BUFFER (Spooner, WI United States)
I am like another reviewer who feels like I have to defend this product. Almost could not believe it when I saw the average review of only three stars as I write this. Did a lot of homework before buying this and when I saw it on sale for just under $200.00 at a competitor of Amazon.com, I had to pull the trigger. I am very glad I did, because the very minor flaws I have encountered thus far (after three weeks of ownership) seem insignificant to me.

Don't compare a player in this price range to one that has double the retail price. To me that is unfair.

I am a guy who has a decent Dolby Digital 5.1 sound system. I don't care if this does not have the latest Dolby TruHD or DTS HD decoders built in, because I am not going to take the plunge into a new AV Reciever thank you. The 5.1 sounds excellent via the optical input. I have a feeling that Philips knows who they are building these things for.

As for Picture quality, I could not be happier. I have it hooked up via HDMI (with the audio off so I can send that via Optical) to a Panasonic 42" Viera plasma (which accepts 1080P24 signal). Blurays look absolutely stunning if you have a TV that can accept 1080P24, and I have not had any of the freeze issues that some others talk about after viewing approximately a dozen bluray titles so far. DVD's look excellent as well (maybe not as good as Oppo), but MUCH better than my previous Samsung DVD player ever produced. Another selling point to me is the fact that it plays all DVD formats. Not just the minus only, some others in this price range. If you have any family stuff, home movies, etc recorded on Plus format dvds, watch out. You might end up not being able to watch them on your new player.

Lastly, If you look at some "big time" reviewers like CNET for example, you may be wrongly swayed against buying something that is not at the absolute top of their list. That would be a shame. I think they got it wrong when they gave this one an average rating.

I really like mine a lot, and I can't imagine that most people would not feel the same way if they picked one up.

having read the negative reviews i felt i had to defend the philips bdp7200 ive had this player for 5 months and have not endured any problems so far! maybe i lucked up on getting one that actual does work but this player plays beautiful blurays, is very quiet, and has played every bluray i have put in it over 50 so far including the new releases without stopping or having to go through the hazzle of upgrading firmware like i have had to do downstairs with the samsung1500 i highly recommend this player!

 "Disappointing" 2009-01-24
By G. Schwarz (NJ USA)
This is good priced blue ray player. I did my research and this unit was rated one of the best buys by Consumer Reports. Got it, hooked it up, and it played the first movie for about an hour then locked up. Took me a while to get my disk out but I finally did. I called Philips and they had great customer service. Very short wait on the phone (especially for a Saturday). They told me they would replace the unit. It took about a week and a half and a new unit arrived. This unit has been working fine for the past 3 weeks. Now here comes the Disappointing part. They replaced my New unit with a refurbished unit. And the refurbushed unit only has a 90 day Warrantee not the 1 year of the new unit. If I had to make another purchase I would purchase another brand.

Shame on you Philips !!!!!

"great blu-ray player for older receivers!" 2009-03-13
By Anti-Climacus (waco, tx)
This is a great blu-ray player and the only one so far to play dvd-audio (now the Oppo does as well for 500 bones), so if that interests you then you are getting a two-for-one deal. This receiver does (contra previous reviews) decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS High Resolution, but not DTS-HD Master. Dolby TrueHD discs like The Dark Knight sound incredible, and of course if a disc has a lossless PCM file (like the first Hellboy or Cars) then this player will pass the lossless sound either over hdmi or the 7.1 analog outputs (this has been confirmed in several forums - the problem is that Panasonic techs do not know what they are talking about). Thus the 7.1 analog outputs are useful for getting the lossless sound of both bds and dvd-audios to older receivers like mine (the exception begin DTS-HD master like Hellboy 2). The picture is great, but the load time is a little slow. Once it gets going, however, the picture and sound are well worth it!

 "firmware updates are sloooooooow" 2009-01-20
By Tom the engineer (Colorado)
I have owned this product for approximately sixteen months. 'great sound, and picture; but a little slow to turn on and load a disk.

My unit shipped with version 2.3 firmware and recently needed a newer version in order to run newer bluray disks. I had to download from the Japanese website because the North American website did not have the latest version (2.5). The first download froze. The second attempt was going to take six hours so I terminated it. The third attempt took about an hour and a half. Everything went smoothly after this.

 "Misleading Panasonic..." 2008-12-05
By Blue Subie (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania United States)
... some might call it lying.

I called Panasonic after hours spent on my Yamaha AV receiver (RX-V863) and the BD10AK menus. The problem: I couldn't get my receiver to push Dolby True HD audio, only PCM or regular Dolby Digital through my 7.1 speakers. Although there are Dolby True HD stickers on the unit itself, the manual actually states that if the media has Dolby True HD or DTS-HD as its soundtrack, the BD-10AK will ONLY playback in Dolby Digital.

So which is true?

The result of the phone call: the BD-10AK does NOT push Dolby True HD, nor DTS-HD. This was straight from technician Curtis at Panasonic. So my Yamaha receiver will take the audio signal and try to push it as best as it can - hopefully converting it to True HD on the way out.

I had already loaded the firmware upgrade from the Panny website (pretty easy). Load times are OK (this is my first blu-ray player). The video is GORGEOUS from blu-ray discs - tested Iron man and the 1st Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Upconverted (up to 1080i) DVD playback is great - tested Ratatouille. Outside of some artifacts, I thought it looked better than playing it through my Yamaha DVD player.

One major reason I bought this 2-year old (since introduced to the general public) Panasonic BD player is its DVD-Audio playback; I have a small collection. It plays back in 5.1, and the newer models do NOT play DVD-A's.

Until I upgrade to a PS3 (or whatever Sony is pushing years from now), the BD10AK will do.

Upgrade to 4 stars due to its ability to play my Chinese DVDs.

 "Perfect" 2008-07-29
By Terry N. Monday Sr. (Tville, NC)
Own mine now for about a year. No problems and picture is awesome! Viewing on a 1080p Panasonic set. I did update the firmware a few months ago and it helped with loading some BD's. Note that some BD disc will be better quality than others. Not the players fault, just the way they compressed the videos.

 "Fantastic Blu-Ray Player" 2008-05-21
By Ivan P. Wiest (Robertsdale, AL)
The Panasonic DMP-BD10A is a high quality Blu-Ray player. Start up times (once the power button is hit to time disk tray will come out)are as fast as my upconvert DVD player...Much faster than the Sony BDP-S300 I use to own. Also the play times (time from when disk is put into player and see disk contents on the TV) are also just as fast as my upconvert DVD player. Picture quality is out of this world! Cannot comment on audio since I'm still using the speakers on my LCD. I wish I would have bought this player instead of my Sony Blu-ray to begin with. Panasonic certainly put a lot of thought and quality into this machine. My only gripe is the remote could have been better laid out, but really no big deal. Some have complained about the flip-down front panel, but I personally like it b/c it hides all the unsightly buttons one typically sees on Blu-ray players. The panel gives this player a handsome appearance. I highly recommend this Panasonic Blu-ray player!!
