 "Love this blu-ray player!" 2009-12-04
By Joseph C. Bennett (Lindenwold, NJ, US)
This onkyo blu-ray player is terrific! Excellent picture and sound. I have been a huge fan of Onkyo products for over 20 years now. This unit completes my entertainment system perfectly. Onkyo products are always made with the finest circuitry and are heavier weight which I like. I would highly recommend this unit to buyers.

I am an Onkyo fan from way back. I ordered the BD696 and the TX806. Deliver was prompt. I have a 60" Sony SXRD rear projection TV and JBL speakers, including a pair of 35 year old L100 Studio Monitors.

The picture and sound on the Blu Ray disk of Australia and on standard DVD's was outstanding. Very pleased. I had a friend who is an expert make all the connections and do all of the settings. It was money well spent. I think a proper set-up is critical in order to get maximum performance.

I bought the DV BD606 as a fan of almost all onkyo products. I have a 906 and their hd dvd player, which are both top notch. I was very disappointed by this funai re-badge. SD upconversion was fair and not nearly as good as a pioneer or samsung 2550. It is not profile 2.0, does not decode the hd audio codecs and lacks any other novelty like Netflix Streaming.

I bought this unit at the Circuit City closing sale on the next to last day at a great price. This is truly a Top of the line Blu-ray player. The up convert of regular DVD's is remarkable. I understand that the processer for this player is more powerful then the Sony play station III. If its quality you want, this is it.

"Extremely Pleased with this Blu-Ray Player" 2009-03-05
By Mr. Moto (USA)
Outstanding player. Picture quality for Blu-ray is as good as it gets and the up-conversion on DVD's is excellent...cannot ask for better. Onkyo must have used some magic here; since it has played every Blu-ray and DVD put in it. Have played well over 100 DVD's, including DVD-R's. As for Blu-ray...around 60 to 70 - All four Rambo's, Die Hard's, three Matrix and both Underworld movies, Iron Man, Incredible Hulk, Wanted, Indiana Jones Kingdom, Fifth Element, Ghost Rider, Dirty Dozen, Eraser, Rocky Balboa, Stargate...etc. All played perfectly without any firmware update. As for BD Live 2.0 ... simply put; it is another way of control and to send commercials.

"Huge suprise from Denon once more" 2009-12-19
By Levi
Here I go again with a review of the Denon DVD-1800BD bluray player.

I knew I was getting a Denon so I wasn't too worried about its performance, because I own the Denon 2500Btci.

When I received it yesterday I took it out of its box, hooked it up via HDMI to my Onkyo Sr-606 AV receiver, and by the way this is in my bedroom.

I set the player up in the menus which took about 2 minutes. After that I had to try it, I tried (The Dark Knight, Terminator Salvation and a few concerts like John Mayer, Rolling Stones, and George Michael).

Well the movies looked amazing and the sound came alive as well, which is strange because this player supposedly doesnt decode anything, it just bitstreams it directly to your receiver. Well I have to say that my bedroom setup has never sounded like it did with the Denon 1800bd.

Everything has changed, and the performance is very close to the Denon 2500Btci. But as far as the concerts, I was like WOW, especially George Michael in London!

So in other words, this player is a must have for $198, and I have to say that none of the Sony's, Panny's, Samsungs, will ever come close to this Denon. Maybe in another lifetime. To me its not just about the 1080P/24 or 60, its also very much about the audio. I moved my Sony BDP-S350 to the master bedroom, and its connected to the TV directly and it does an okay job, but for sure it was never like any Denon I have ever tried.

So do yourself a favor and if you need a bluray player and got $198, go for it, you will NOT be dissapointed.

I own 5 Denon's now, 2 bluray's 2 dvd player and 1 receiver, and I couldnt be any happier.

Thank You Denon for making products with so much passion and hard work.

"Great Product... But Don't Buy It !!!" 2009-12-01
By Gene A. Garrison (Thibodaux, LA United States)
I've been using the Denon DVD-1800BD Blu-Ray Player for about eight months now. It is a handsome piece of equipment and it plays beautifully. It is very easy to control with the remote and I couldn't ask for a better player. HOWEVER... If I had it to do over again I would certainly look somewhere else. Updating the firmware in this player is a royal pain in the tush. The update file is available from the Denon website but you must enter your password, model, serial number, where you bought it, etc, etc, etc everytime you download a file. Then you must use Nero or Roxio to burn a CD-R data disk using very precise settings or the player will not accept it. I have never been able to get the player to accept one of my burned update disks yet. This has caused me to have to contact Denon by phone and request them to mail an update disk to me. In order for them to send a disk you must provide them, either by fax or e-mail, a copy of your receipt, the model and serial number. Once the customer service person receives the info he will then send a request to the Denon corporate office for them to send the update disk. Once you finally receive the disk and put it into the player, there is a very specific sequence of keystrokes you must press on the remote in order for the update to begin. The instructions say to do the keystrokes within 1 to 2 secoinds... but you really don't have that long. You must do it very fast, within about one second, in order for it to work. Anyway... See what I mean!? Please do yourself a favor and look somewhere else. There are plenty of wifi units out there that update themselves automatically over the internet... including the Sony PS3 which is probably what I should have gotten. Good Luck!

 "Great Player" 2010-01-30

I bought this for my three year old grandson and he loves watching it. When my daughter and son-in-law go out to dinner, they take this with them and it keeps the little one occupied after he has finished his dinner and they are eating their dinner. It is easy to use and my grandson can do it all himself. It has a nice long battery life, too.

"Almost perfect portable DVD/CD player" 2010-01-18
By C. Paterson
Nearly Perfect.

It is slippery because of the finish on the plastic body. The player slip-slides around in your lap, or anywhere else you may set it down. Easy to drop although I haven't yet.

I don't care for the fact that there is no sound on the 2X fast forward speed. I use the Phillips portable DVD player to watch educational DVD's. My home player will play sound on the lowest level of fast forward or 2X. The voices do sound like the "Chipmunks" but you can hear and understand the dialog. It is especially handy when reviewing and for long winded teachers! Bummer.

The 3 screen brightness selections are great. In the sunny outdoors using the player on 'bright' works well. To save battery life view on 'low' and of course for most conditions 'normal' is the ticket.

AVI jacks and a charger come with it. But no ear buds. My headphones work well with the player though. The battery charger works fine.

All in all I would trade it for a player with audio in fast forward. Other than that, it is a well built, full featured player. You can even view your CDs but the image format MUST BE JPEG.

"Great player, superb battery stamina, lightweight" 2010-01-06
By Rustam (Bratcho) Haydarov (Manhattan, KS)
This is a great product. We used to have an old 7" Initial brand player and jumping to 9" brand new device seemed like a miracle. We have ordered the item few days before our road trip so actually had to pay an extra 20$ or so for overnight delivery. Despite that quite satisfied with the product and do not regret for a second.

I liked the design of the player and it being white and glossy recalls some associations with stylish Apple brands. It is somewhat thick body but extremely lightweight for the size. The compartment for DVD is covered by 2/3 size of the body top that opens up. The top looks a bit weak and you naturally would want to be somewhat careful when inserting the DVD. May be a smaller opening for DVD would be more reliable, however would mess up the design.

I guess the biggest surprise for me was the life of the battery. We drove from KS to TX for 8 hours and our little one was watching it almost all the way through. No, the battery would not hold for 8 hours, but no less than 5, for sure. We heard "are we there yet?" only for two times that made the drive much more pleasant... ))

The battery is located inside the player and you can not remove it like with laptop, or other players without unscrewing it. It puzzled me because to extend the battery life one would want to have control over their power, i.e. to remove it one the device works from DC. But I realized this is not a problem as there is built in controller that charges the battery only when the device is in a switched off mode, unlike your laptop, that can be charged while operating from DC. It may be inconvenient, if you don't have time to charge it overnight and need to charge it while watching, but we didn't have problems with it. The player come with a car adapter and AV out cord. Well, again here Phillips tried to economize or what and actually made it short, so to connect to your TV you would need you regular AV cord that, arguably, is available in every household. However, it would've been nice to have the full cord in the set.

Picture quality is okay. I would rate it 7.5 out of 10. Before purchasing I read some comments that resolution is somewhat low. I guess I would've not brought that up if I didn't read the comments before. I scrutinized the screen to a greater detail. If you look at the screen very close, indeed you may be able to see pixel lines. Certainly, you computer monitor have a better resolution. But this is a bigger than 7" screen and one doesn't have to keep it very close. It is big enough to watch together.

Sound quality is extremely good and loud. If you are heading for the trip make sure you get some headphones. If you would like to connect a pair of headphones you would need to get a splitter (not included). I think Phillips could've make two sound exits.

Okay, it seems I wrote too many "could've been" words despite of my good rating. I think this is a great player for the price. No, it is not cheap piece and doesn't look cheap either. I recommended this player to my sister when she wanted to get one for her son. The best thing about Phillips players that they don't give you head ache with reading DVDs from various regions. This one reads also DVX files that was of utmost importance for us as we have quite a few disk in video formats. Look at some competitors and you'll come back to this product, unless you want to invest 60-90$ more for the same feature but top brand. Good luck!

"Meets all of my needs" 2009-12-18
By Susan Tunis (San Francisco, CA)
I received this portable DVD player as a surprise birthday gift recently. I have to say that so far I'm delighted with the machine. The first pleasant surprise is that it was charged up and ready to go, right out of the box. I haven't taken so much as a look at the instructions yet, but have found every aspect of the player's function to be user-friendly and easily intuitive (which coming from me is saying something).

Another reviewer complained about the picture quality. I find it to be perfectly fine. My one tip would be to make sure you've got the screen angled properly for best viewing. Additionally, the sound quality, in particular the volume level, was far superior to an Insignia portable player I was using a few weeks ago. The included remote control was also significantly better than the other brand, as it had more features available such as on-screen display, angle, and zoom.

I've spent hours at a stretch watching DVDs on my player, and I've yet to see a low battery indicator. The long battery life is fantastic! Again, the 5+ hour battery life was about twice that of the other DVD player I tested. In addition to the typical charging and connecting cables, the Philips player comes with a protective neoprene sleeve for when you're traveling with your DVD player. It's very basic, but serves a purpose. The machine is certainly small and light enough to slip into a carry-on or even large purse without too much fuss. This isn't a top of the line portable player, but seems like a reasonable value for the price. The construction feels sturdy. The design is sleek. And this small luxury item meets all of my needs.

 "Excellent Blu-Ray Disc Player" 2010-01-26
By Nina Forsyth Thompson (Seattle, Wa)
This is an excellent blu-ray player. The colors are vibrant and the picture is crisp connected to my Sony LCD television via the HDMI port. Disc loading times are miniscule, with the player initiating playback in no time

I have tested both recent and older blu-ray titles (The Prestigeand have experienced no problems loading the disc or enjoying the non-BD Live special features. The unit itself is very sleek and slender and weighs less than five pounds. Additionally, the player is silent during use.

I highly recommend this player to anyone interested in owning a great blu-ray player at the decent price spectrum. Yamaha as always knocks the competition out or perhaps im biased towards Yamaha.

"NOPE! LOOK ELSEWHERE FOR YOUR BLU-RAY PLAYER" 2010-01-19
By Extemporaneous (Oceania)
When Dorothy and crew approached the castle of the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, she encountered a old, dilapidated wooden sign that read . . . "I'd go back if I were you", and this expresses my sentiments perfectly for anyone considering the Yamaha BD-S1065 Blu-Ray Player. As a diehard Yamaha fan, I truly wish that I could offer prospective buyers of the Yamaha BD-S1065 something 'positive' about this particular player, because I've been a staunch supporter/consumer of all things 'Yamaha' for many years. The fact is, they make some of the finest home "audio" components available anywhere, but I'm afraid the same cannot be said of their "video" gear including the BD-S1065.

Let me say at the outset that I own the Yamaha RX-V863BL A/V (home theatre) receiver ($600) and its an awesome unit! I also own a full line-up of Yamaha home theatre speakers including the Yamaha NS-C444 center speaker ($150), two Yamaha NS-B750 bookshelf speakers ($1200/pair), and a Yamaha YST-SW315 sub-woofer ($250), all of which operate flawlessly for me. So it seemed to make perfect sense to trust in the purchase of a new Yamaha BD-S1065 blu-ray player ($400) for our developing home theatre system. But unfortunately, that trust was completely shattered when I connected and evaluated the BD-S1065.

The first unit I received had more problems than I care to articulate (right out of the box), but the single most troublesome flaw was that it took the player "eons" to load a new (standard issue) blu-ray disc. I mean it took literally 4-5 continuous minutes of scanning the disc before anything at all appeared on the television screen, and even then, it would re-enter yet another secondary "reading" phase that made the unit completely unusable in practical terms. I tried it on multiple discs of variable manufacture, and it misbehaved the same on each and every one of them. However, it also had a grossly outdated version of firmware, so being the optimist that I am (i.e., thinking that this might be the source of the problems), I foolishly went to the trouble of downloading the newest version of firmware from the Yamaha website to a CD/R disc via home computer and then transferring the new firmware to the BD-1065. Unfortunately, despite the firmware update, the problems all continued. In fact, some additional issues arose after the update including completely random stoppage of blu-ray discs right smack in the middle of viewing a movie (almost like a screensaver event)! Weird! Very-very weird. And significantly, the faulty behavior could not be duplicated using the same discs with a PlayStation 3 (PS3) or other (Samsung) blu-ray player.

Fortunately, Amazon has always been great about returns, so I sent the unit back for a replacement. A week later, the second (new replacement) BD-S1065 arrived, so I plugged it in (just as before). To my utter dismay, all of the same issues or problems with the first unit were present with the 2nd (replacement) unit including protracted load times, excessive and multiple disc readings, random stoppage of the disc in the middle of playback, etc., etc. And believe me, the list of headaches goes on from there! In each instance, I used brand new blu-ray discs all of which played without incident on a blu-ray equipped PS3 and similar Samsung unit, and in each instance, I was able to repeat the problem by returning the disc to the Yamaha BD-S1065. End of story.

Bottom line? This unit is NOT worth considering for your blu-ray needs. Sorry Yamaha, but I'd recommend that people look elsewhere for their blu-ray needs.

 "Great performer!" 2010-01-18
By K. Klein (Iowa, United States)
After dealing with playback issues on lesser Blu Ray players, I decided to go all in and buy something high end. This is a true piece of A/V equipment, not half toy / half computer. It has played everything I've put in it without skipping. Several DVD's that I thought were scratched because they always skip at some point play without hesitation in this player. The sound in fantastic, partly due to my Yamaha reciever, but I do notice a difference.

The remote is OK but I use a Logitech Harmony so it doesn't matter for me.

The case is full sized, not ultra slim player here. I had to adust my shelves to fit it in my A/V cabinet.

My only issue so far is that the USB port is in the rear and you can't download updates directly from the internet. When I attached the ethernet cable to the network, I assumed that the updates would be downloaded onto the flash drive I had inserted. Not so. I had to download the files from the internet to put on the flash drive and re-insert into the rear of the player. This is not too big of an issue for the way I have my setup, but I could see how it could be a pain if someone didn't have easy access to the rear of the player.

I have the LG 60PS80 so I don't miss the Netflix and YouTube, but I found on other players I had that I didn't use them much anyway for it to affect my purchase decision.

 "BREAKS CONSTANTLY--SUPPORT STAFF UNHELPFUL" 2010-01-25
By S. Wynn (New York, NY)
Bought this Blu Ray unit in December. It lasted about 2 weeks before ceasing to function properly. I sent it back to Samsung and after 2 weeks (!) had what they said was a repaired unit. It worked for an hour or so and then broke again. It wouldn't play at all. I called Samsung and they sent me to "Executive Support' which, I found out, meant I would spend 20 minutes on hold before reaching someone. When I finallY DID reach someone, my call was cut off after 1 minute. This is a poorly made unit and the support staff is unhelpful. I would STRONGLY recommend against buying this piece--I can't imagine any other unit being any worse than this Samsung product. I'll never buy anything from Samsung again. Seriously, don't buy this terribly made unit.

 "Completely worthless" 2010-01-24
By A. Miller (USA)
WARNING: YOU ARE TAKING A MAJOR RISK PURCHASING THIS PRODUCT

I bought this at SAM's about 5 months ago. Even from the start I could tell there were problems. Every once and awhile the buttons would become unresponsive, specifically the eject button. I would have to manually push the disk tray back into the machine. Then last night I was watching a movie and right in the middle the player broke. The player is now totally unresponsive and only displays colored static over a blue screen. I cannot even perform a factory reset (holding the FFWD button for 8 seconds). Unfortunately, I cannot find my original receipt, and even though I registered this product with Samsung, they will not honor the warranty. Based on personal experience, as well as the numerous reviews all over the internet, I think I can say with certainty that this is one of the lowest quality blu-ray players available.

Note: If you do decide to purchase this item, make sure you purchase any extended warranty that is offered by the retailer, as this product is virtually guaranteed to stop working at some point in the near future.

"junk, does not play blu-ray" 2010-01-23
By Brian Carnett (Equality, Illinois United States)
Netflix streaming works well.

Pandora works well.

BD-Live - does not work. It just says no internet connection. Odd how netflix/pandora work online but not bd-live.

Blu-ray playback - Most blu-rays skip/stutter. The movie pauses and you hear the drive spin up. Then it skips.

It does not do it on the same spot. Watch the same movie and it just completely random. This on bran new blu-ray disks.

hanna montanna plays horribly, cloudy with a chance of meatballs skips a few times, but some play just fine.

I've returned it and purchased a Sony.

Also, it does not have wireless, it has a usb plugin for a 80$ wireless adapter that you can only get from Samsung. It isn't a problem as I ran my own cat-5 ethernet to the unit. But bd-live would not accept the connection.

 "Not so great...." 2010-01-23
By Jimmy B. (Des Moines, IA)
My neighbor and I bought this player at the same place (Sam's Club) on the same day. I got home, opened the box and went to hook up the player with the (not so) included HDMI cable. Yep....no HDMI cable inside. Drove the 15+ miles back to Sam's and got them to give me one. They said that there have been several of these opened that don't have the HDMI cable included like it says on the box. My neighbor's player had one included, but his would never power on. When he exchanged the player, the new one he got didn't have the HDMI inside either. Not much to say about this player other than it's loud when loading a DVD/Blu-ray and the Netflix feature likes to freeze when I try to use it (Even with the latest firmware) All in all I would say...pass.

 "Samsung BD-P1590 Blu-Ray Player" 2010-01-17
By Pat D. Vigil
I bought this at Sam's Club for $129.99 (Item # #899048). I understand they are $148.86 at the time of my writing of this review. Well I have to say, I am very impressed with this piece of equipment. I connected the unit out of the box with minimal problems as a preliminary check of the video and audio quality. The video and audio quality are stunning on my 50" Vizio plasma (Full 1080P HD).

On that note, keep in mind that just because you have a Blu-ray player with 1080P capability, you need to make sure your other equipment supports it. I ran in to an issue with my JVCRX-D412B A/V Receiver not passing through the 1080P video and ended up using the HDMI from the BD-1590 directly input into one of the Vizio HDMI inputs for the video. (Your receiver must support HDMI version 1.3 for full HD 1080P) Additionally, I had an issue with the Vizio not passing through the full DTS audio though the HDMI and ended up connecting the BD-1590 audio directly to my JVCRX-D412B via the digital audio (S/PDIF) outputs/inputs on each. I basically had to bypass my receiver to get the full 1080P video and bypass my Vizio TV to get the full 7.1/DTS audio. So this unit does have the outputs and inputs to allow you to work around some of these issues.

I connected this to my home network using the Ethernet port on the BD-1590 to use some of the other killer features on the device. Initially on the screen it had options for Netflix and Pandora. Once I did the update on the firmware (since it now becomes a part of your home network), it added Blockbuster and YouTube features. This is a very nice feature that does not require the connection of a PC! I would not buy a Blu-Ray player that does not have network connectivity. This feature vastly increases the capability of the player. I am a Netflix subscriber and added the Blu-Ray option for two bucks! And now in addition to having Blu-Ray disks mailed to my house, I also get unlimited streaming of Netflix content. I was surprised to find out that Netflix also has about 600 titles in HD! Streaming HD video for eleven bucks a month is an unbelievable value. I see no need to pay for premium channels from my Satellite provider, which by the way, is not broadcast in full 1080P HD. This unit will also play media via a USB memory stick. This unit up-converts standard DVD's to much higher quality video.

This unit supports BD-LIVE which allows you to enjoy a variety of interactive service contents provided by the disc manufacturer through a network connection. This unit has a front and Rear USB connection. The rear one is primarily for the WiFi connection. The USB port can be used to access mp3, or JPEG content on a 1GB or higher memory stick, download BD-Live data, as an input for your LAN or to input firmware upgrades.

Besides the additional content you can access via the internet connectivity, this feature allows you to update the firmware for future functionality and content, which I am optimistic will be forthcoming considering by the time I got the device home they had added Blockbuster and YouTube access. This allows you to increase the life of the device because the firmware updates basically makes this a new device each time features are added, reducing the obsolescence factor!

Note on the connectivity: It does have wireless capability if you do not have a hard wired Ethernet solution. I personally would not use that option if you don't have to for security, reliability. This unit does not come with the proprietary USB wifi adapter in the box. I understand they are between $60 - $80. However, if that is your only option, this player will handle it, although I have not tested that myself. I ended up using an existing Ethernet jack with a splitter (Thanks Cyber Guys) to split my single jack between my PC and the BD-1590, with no loss in bandwidth speed & quality on streaming video, even running both simultaneously.

The unit is a sleek black design with touch type buttons, which makes it semi-child proof, as there is no openings on the surface of the buttons for the inevitable curious dirty toddler fingers. One of the cool things about watching Blu-ray movies is the interactive menus available while watching the movie and additional bonus material on the disks. Most disks pack about 25GB of data, which is what gives you the high quality audio, video, additional features. The visual quality is an obvious improvement, but if you have a quality A/V receiver, the 7.1 surround, DTS, audio is incredible.

One flaw I found is that it does not seem to remember where you left off when you stop watching a movie, turn off the unit and return later to finish the movie. This is a standard feature on most regular DVD players. I'm not sure if it's my ignorance of if it just does not do this. I'm hoping that this can be resolved with a future firmware update.

I can't stress enough about the importance of the internet connectivity feature. Even if you don't realize this now, YOU WANT this feature; especially, considering the price of most new Blu-Ray disks. This feature gives you much more use out of this unit and keeps the unit up to date with new and future options. I use the Netflix steaming, Pandora, YouTube options but do not have an account with Blockbuster. Netflix, Blockbuster and YouTube features are self explanatory, but if you are not familiar with Pandora it is a FREE music steaming site that allows you to create your own "radio stations" and listen to streaming high quality audio. The interface via the BD-1590 is smooth and user friendly and allows you the same interface options as the access via a PC.

 "Denon DVD-2500btci magic" 2009-12-09
By CARALMOL (SAN SALVADOR)
The sound is perfect, I have PS3 and watch bluray movies for over two years. The PQ is very similar, colors look more natural, but the sound, that's where this thing shines. Denon and Onkyo, may say not a good combination but with my 875 sounds terrific.

Great product.

"Great player - worthy of the Denon name" 2009-12-01
By Mr. Opinion (USA)
I was lucky to purchase this Blu ray transport at a great price through Amazon (from Vann's), which made it competitive with a number of other players. I have several Denon components and like the brand, so I chose this model. I have not been disappointed!

The DVD-2500 is not for everyone... note that it has one connection out - HDMI only. If that won't work for you, then don't buy this player. However, if that does work for you... so will the 2500. Picture quality and sound are amazing! Though it takes some time to load discs (as they all do), there is no lag once you start playing. What I am also very impressed with is the upscaling of DVD video to 1080P-quality images. This makes re-veiwing your existing DVD collection a treat - almost as if your entire library has been upgraded.

The unit is built like a brick - heavy and sturdy. I anticpate years of use and enjoyment, and would make this same purchase again. The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is for the lack of Internet capable features that most players support now. I can live without those features, but for the price range of this player one might expect it to have Internet capable features - which it does not.

"Best Value I've Seen In A While" 2009-08-21
By P. Montgomery (Southeast US)
When first introduced, MSRP for the DVD-2500BTCI was $1k. I liked it and would have paid that much for it eventually. But when it went on sale for $500, I just couldn't resist. Assuming Denon hasn't substituted cheaper parts somewhere along the way, the current sale prices of under $350 are almost like legalized shoplifting. This is my first Blu-Ray player so I don't have another to compare it to. But both picture and sound are outstanding. As long as you only need an HDMI output, and are patient at least in some regards, I can't recommend this unit enough. Observed Strengths & Weaknesses below.

STRENGTHS:

With just about every receiver, pre/pro, etc., out there already having an array of surround decoders, D/A converters, etc., I found it annoying that these were duplicated and charged for in just about all DVD/Blu-Ray players. Not so in the DVD-2500BTCI, which is why it is called a "transport" instead of a "player." You're only paying for what you need...no useless stuff that's duplicated elsewhere in a typical system.

Unit has a nice, high-end feel that rivals that of $2k pieces from anybody. Front panel buttons have a nice, positive feel, and the disc drawer is silken-smooth and nearly silent.

Detachable power cord

Can program it with a 2nd remote code so as not to interfere with other Denon units.

When you're at Chapter 10 or higher, there is now a space between the Chapter# and Time, instead of one big row of hard-to-read gobbledygook all run together, as on Denon's previous players.

Remote has a nice, quality feel in many ways.

WEAKNESSES

Response is sloooooooooooowwwwwwwwwww; Stop command during Blu-Ray disc playback sometimes took 30 seconds for player to acknowledge. This may be more a property of Blu-Ray players than of Denon specifically, but I am mentioning it anyway since responsiveness is at least to some degree important to me.

No Power Off, just Stand By.

Among the 3 brands of DVD transports/players I have used heavily, the transports on the Denons have consistently been the least precise. For example, if you are fast-forwarding and then press Play, playback sometimes doesn't resume even close to the point where you pressed the Play button. Other brands land close or dead on.

Remote buttons have to be pressed firmly to work.

I've bought (almost literally) a ton of Denon products over the years. Counting only the ones I bought new from authorized dealers, many have arrived defective, or had "issues" shortly after the warranty expired. The people that answer their Tech questions have actually been OK, but those in their repair center have been aloof, evasive, and sometimes questionably competent. Making things worse, repair/replacement parts have been discontinued insanely early on many of their most expensive pieces.

 "Goes great with a Denon AVR-4308CI" 2009-07-15
By But It's a Dry Rain (Seattle)
I have a Denon AVR-4308CI bought at a bargain price (not from Amazon). Everyone said that the DVD-2500BTCI would go great with that receiver and they were right.

Connecting the DVD player to the receiver with an HDMI cable was very easy. I think that's the ONLY way to connect the two.

People who say the 2500BTCI is built like a brick poop-house are correct; the unit is solid and feels like it will outlast the Blu-Ray format (which could be all of two years, the way technology is changing!)

What impressed me most was not the picture, which is awesome, but the way the 2500BTCI and the AVR-4308CI work together to create the best SOUND I've heard outside of a movie theater. And I really don't have a fancy home theater system. I've got two Vienna Acoustic Haydn Grand speakers, a Vienna Acoustic Waltz Grand center speaker, and an REL Q108 subwoofer.

I feel I got a bargain buying the DVD-2500BTCI from Amazon for $279.
