"The worse dvd player I ever purchase!!!" 2009-02-03
By Marcus Welch
Where can I begin, I purchase the BD-P1000 the day it hit the shelf. That was the start of my horror story. I am a home theatre fanatic and I like the best of the best! I have two Pioneer Elite and I thought the Samsung BD-1000 would fit well with my home theatre system... But I was wrong!! It take forever for the player to start up, several firmware updates and I still have several Blu Ray Discs in my library that still doesn't play. It get frustrating after renting a Blu-Ray movie from BlockBuster or buying them from BestBuys my Samsung BD-P1000 is not able to play them. It's like russian roulette... some play... some don't!!! After several phone calls to Samsung customer service, numerous firmware updates and being repaired (3) times I still have several movies in my library unable to play. So I finally got fed up and went to my local BestBuy store and purchased another Blu-Ray player. Not to mention I have a MX 3000 remote control that control all my components hidden away in the closet. That is programed to my SamSung Blu-Ray player and cost $400 to get reprogrammed I was forced to by another SamSung product. Which works fine 5 star (BD-P2550). To end this review. For the amount of $1000 I have had players $75 that work better. If you ever buy a SamSung product do your research and remember this... SamSung has the WORST customer service I have ever experienced!!!!!

"How to set up and maintain the BD-P1000" 2008-10-22
By Anthony Dragani
This player actually works quite well, once you know how to properly set it up and maintain it. The unfortunate thing is that, right out of the box, it will require a firmware update. Here is everything that you need to know:

- Many of the early reviews complained that it lacked a sharp, truly hi-def picture. That is because it shipped with a faulty programmed video chip. Thankfully, the firmware updates have corrected this problem... it now delivers picture quality comparable to a PS3 (I've compared them on my 50" 1080p TV).

- You will need to update the firmware for it to play the latest releases. This is not particularly difficult. You can find the latest firmware on the Samsung website, under product support. The firmware comes in the form of an ISO image. You will need to burn the ISO image to a CD-R using image burning software. I use DeepBurner, which is a freeware program that you can readily find by doing an internet search. Once you burn the ISO image to the CD-R, you simply place the disc in the player and it will perform the update.

- A number of people have complained that this player, even with the latest firmware, will not play new releases. Actually, in most cases these persons have a "full cache" problem. What this means is that the player's memory has residual java programming hanging around, preventing it from loading some newer java-heavy discs. This is easy to fix. Simply press and hold down on the FF button on the player itself (not the remote). This will clear the cache. You will then need to go into the player's menu and double-check the display settings, as they sometimes change as a result of this procedure. This almost always solves the problem.

- It has been my experience that when the firmware is updated, and the cache is properly cleared, the BDP-1000 will play any movie without a hitch. Using the latest firmware (at the time of this writing, version 1.6), this player works flawlessly. I have yet to encounter a blu-ray disc that it will not play. Considering that I picked this up on clearance for a very reasonable price, I am extremely satisfied. No, it will not display picture in picture video, nor can it handle BD-Live internet connectivity, as do the latest higher-end players. But it will play blu-ray movies with excellent picture quality, which is all that I really need for it do.

"PLEASE AVOID AT ALL COST!" 2008-06-12
By Stuart J. Shields
I have this player I would strongly state that you not purchase unless you $300.00 to spend what is really a "beefed up DVD player". It won't play any blu-ray discs past March of this year. I have called their "customer service" countless times with no resolution. They will not provide you with any up to date firmware nor any real support. The last rep I spoke to laughed at me. So do yourself a favor and shop for another brand. This is a big waste of money.

I've never had a single problem with this player. It is a little slow to load but that's not a problem for me at all.. it gives me time to settle down. It works flawlessly and samsung provides free upgrades on their website. I think it's the best player for the price.

 "Won't play newer blu-ray discs." 2010-01-09

I bought two of these units when they first came out (2007?). Firmware up to date (through network connection) but now wont play any newer blu-ray discs (such as "Bruno" or "Taking Woodstock"). No problem playing older blu-ray discs. Samsung not respond to email. I will never buy Samsung again.

Update: Samsung emailed me to suggest I reset the unit (which I had done numerous times) or just wait for the next update!

"This device is NOT worth the packaging" 2009-11-30
By Adam L. Stanley (Chicago, IL)
I have had nothing but trouble with this unit since I purchased it and it only gets worse with time. I was finally able to get a firmware upgrade from Samsung for the 1400 after months of being unable to watch anything new. Now that I have upgraded the firmware, I CANNOT WATCH ANYTHING OLD!!!! I just installed the 090803 firmware upgrade and I am ONLY able to watch bluray discs. Everything else gets spit out as unable to be played. Even when it works, it takes forever to load movies and often just stops in the middle of a movie. DO NOT BUY THIS UNIT. From what I have read, it is better to just buy a PS3.

 "Avoid! Waste of money!" 2009-11-01
By Laura (Chicago, IL)
I've had this player for about 18 months and wish I'd never bought it. It has brought me nothing but headaches. BR discs load really sloooooowly, if at all. Then, once it plays, the disc frequently stops and skips. Firmware is impossible to update, and then the disc still won't play! I've spent an hour tonight trying to play Drag Me to Hell and it won't play. The firmware is up-to-date but it keeps saying "Loading." It never plays. I've had this problem before and hoped a firmware upgrade would help. It didn't biggest waste of money. Avoid this product at all costs!

 "Fantastic Amazon Blu-Ray steal" 2009-12-27
By Jeffrey Osborn (Yonkers, NY)
$130 for a Samsung Blu-Ray unit, WOW! Thanks Amazon!

Musta been a sale of the day but I saw this $200 unit for $130 on Amazon. Bought it for my son for Christmas, along with 5 Blu-Ray movies (from Amazon, of course).

He was floored when he got it. He had 3 large bags of gifts to go home with but he wanted to take the Blu-Ray that night. (He has to walk up a long driveway which was covered with a foot of snow, he didn't care, the unit was going home on Christmas day.)

He bought me a Blu-Ray last year which you can upgrade over the internet or from a CD. Since he had just moved into his new place, there was no cable/internet service yet. I helped him upgrade the firmware on this unit by downloading the file to a flash drive, he just plugged it into the unit when he got home and ran the update.

Sweet, clean small unit.

I should have purchased 2 - we still have DVD only in the bedroom.

 "I've had enough." 2009-02-26
By Mark Shillingburg (New Hampshire, USA)
Today, February 26, 2009, is the day I cut my losses and buy a new player. After fighting with the Samsung for almost two years, I've had enough. During that time, there was never a moment where all the discs in my collection played properly...or, in some cases, at all. The first firmware update helped, but subsequent attempts seemed to do nothing. AND even if they had, about 50% of the audio CD's that I try to play on it skip. They always have. And I suspect that no firmware update is going to address that. The most maddening thing about this is that, being an "early adopter" of the format, I paid a fortune for this thing. It's going to be a lonnnnggg time before I consider buying another Samsung product.

 "Lots of glitches" 2009-02-06
By John J. Sirica Jr. (New York USA)
I can only complain so much, because I paid all of $130 for this on a Best Buy closeout. However, despite firmware updates, the machine will not play Blu-rays by 20th Century Fox; nor would it play "Zohan," from Sony. Also, lip-syncing problems are common on other Blu-ray discs. On the upside, the picture on the Blu-ray discs that do play is very good, as is upconversion of standard DVD's.

 "Samsung Sucks" 2008-12-31
By Mel Rose (Sartell, MN)
Like everyone else my Samsung player will not play new Blurays because of the need for a firmware update. This update is ONLY available for Windows compatible PC's and even then is problematic. So, my $400 player is basically a brick. The arrogance and remarkable incompetence of this company is notable even in an industry plagued with poor quality. Do yourself a major favor - don't buy anything from Samsung.

"Player works great. Updates could be easier" 2008-11-21
By David Doyle
This product has been great. The picture and sound quality are excellent and I think that the player is very good. The only thing that I think needs improving is the process to do the firmwares. It could be a lot easier instead of doing all of the steps to complete the updates. Once the updates are done, all of the newer dvd's worked just fine and I haven't had any problems since. Overall I recommend this player because it is a good quality product.

 "Seriously Bummed." 2010-02-06
By Ryan Lizama (Kaneohe, HI)
Stopped playing bluray disks after 2 months. Forced to send it back via Fedex, waited a week before Samsung fixed it, then it was sent back via snail mail. Well over 3 weeks without a Bluray/DVD player.

Device worked for another 2 months and stopped working over same issue, 'cannot read this disk'. Called Samsung and they said to spray compressed air into player. Silly me. Still did not work. Now, I'm supposed to send it back again via FedEx except my warranty only covers 3 months labor with 1 year parts. This player is not even 6 months old and I'm spending some cash on repairs that should not be happening.

Screw that, never get a Samsung 'Anything' again. Their tech support is weak, their warranty bites, I'm getting a PS3 or some other brand that plays Netflix and Pandora. We shouldn't have to spend 2 bills just to receive the cold shoulder. So irritated right now.

 "BREAKS CONSTANTLY--SUPPORT STAFF UNHELPFUL" 2010-01-25
By S. Wynn (New York, NY)
Bought this Blu Ray unit in December. It lasted about 2 weeks before ceasing to function properly. I sent it back to Samsung and after 2 weeks (!) had what they said was a repaired unit. It worked for an hour or so and then broke again. It wouldn't play at all. I called Samsung and they sent me to "Executive Support' which, I found out, meant I would spend 20 minutes on hold before reaching someone. When I finallY DID reach someone, my call was cut off after 1 minute. This is a poorly made unit and the support staff is unhelpful. I would STRONGLY recommend against buying this piece--I can't imagine any other unit being any worse than this Samsung product. I'll never buy anything from Samsung again. Seriously, don't buy this terribly made unit.

 "Completely worthless" 2010-01-24
By A. Miller (USA)
WARNING: YOU ARE TAKING A MAJOR RISK PURCHASING THIS PRODUCT

I bought this at SAM's about 5 months ago. Even from the start I could tell there were problems. Every once and awhile the buttons would become unresponsive, specifically the eject button. I would have to manually push the disk tray back into the machine. Then last night I was watching a movie and right in the middle the player broke. The player is now totally unresponsive and only displays colored static over a blue screen. I cannot even perform a factory reset (holding the FFWD button for 8 seconds). Unfortunately, I cannot find my original receipt, and even though I registered this product with Samsung, they will not honor the warranty. Based on personal experience, as well as the numerous reviews all over the internet, I think I can say with certainty that this is one of the lowest quality blu-ray players available.

Note: If you do decide to purchase this item, make sure you purchase any extended warranty that is offered by the retailer, as this product is virtually guaranteed to stop working at some point in the near future.

"junk, does not play blu-ray" 2010-01-23
By Brian Carnett (Equality, Illinois United States)
Netflix streaming works well.

Pandora works well.

BD-Live - does not work. It just says no internet connection. Odd how netflix/pandora work online but not bd-live.

Blu-ray playback - Most blu-rays skip/stutter. The movie pauses and you hear the drive spin up. Then it skips.

It does not do it on the same spot. Watch the same movie and it just completely random. This on bran new blu-ray disks.

hanna montanna plays horribly, cloudy with a chance of meatballs skips a few times, but some play just fine.

I've returned it and purchased a Sony.

Also, it does not have wireless, it has a usb plugin for a 80$ wireless adapter that you can only get from Samsung. It isn't a problem as I ran my own cat-5 ethernet to the unit. But bd-live would not accept the connection.

 "Not so great...." 2010-01-23
By Jimmy B. (Des Moines, IA)
My neighbor and I bought this player at the same place (Sam's Club) on the same day. I got home, opened the box and went to hook up the player with the (not so) included HDMI cable. Yep....no HDMI cable inside. Drove the 15+ miles back to Sam's and got them to give me one. They said that there have been several of these opened that don't have the HDMI cable included like it says on the box. My neighbor's player had one included, but his would never power on. When he exchanged the player, the new one he got didn't have the HDMI inside either. Not much to say about this player other than it's loud when loading a DVD/Blu-ray and the Netflix feature likes to freeze when I try to use it (Even with the latest firmware) All in all I would say...pass.

 "Samsung BD-P1590 Blu-Ray Player" 2010-01-17
By Pat D. Vigil
I bought this at Sam's Club for $129.99 (Item # #899048). I understand they are $148.86 at the time of my writing of this review. Well I have to say, I am very impressed with this piece of equipment. I connected the unit out of the box with minimal problems as a preliminary check of the video and audio quality. The video and audio quality are stunning on my 50" Vizio plasma (Full 1080P HD).

On that note, keep in mind that just because you have a Blu-ray player with 1080P capability, you need to make sure your other equipment supports it. I ran in to an issue with my JVCRX-D412B A/V Receiver not passing through the 1080P video and ended up using the HDMI from the BD-1590 directly input into one of the Vizio HDMI inputs for the video. (Your receiver must support HDMI version 1.3 for full HD 1080P) Additionally, I had an issue with the Vizio not passing through the full DTS audio though the HDMI and ended up connecting the BD-1590 audio directly to my JVCRX-D412B via the digital audio (S/PDIF) outputs/inputs on each. I basically had to bypass my receiver to get the full 1080P video and bypass my Vizio TV to get the full 7.1/DTS audio. So this unit does have the outputs and inputs to allow you to work around some of these issues.

I connected this to my home network using the Ethernet port on the BD-1590 to use some of the other killer features on the device. Initially on the screen it had options for Netflix and Pandora. Once I did the update on the firmware (since it now becomes a part of your home network), it added Blockbuster and YouTube features. This is a very nice feature that does not require the connection of a PC! I would not buy a Blu-Ray player that does not have network connectivity. This feature vastly increases the capability of the player. I am a Netflix subscriber and added the Blu-Ray option for two bucks! And now in addition to having Blu-Ray disks mailed to my house, I also get unlimited streaming of Netflix content. I was surprised to find out that Netflix also has about 600 titles in HD! Streaming HD video for eleven bucks a month is an unbelievable value. I see no need to pay for premium channels from my Satellite provider, which by the way, is not broadcast in full 1080P HD. This unit will also play media via a USB memory stick. This unit up-converts standard DVD's to much higher quality video.

This unit supports BD-LIVE which allows you to enjoy a variety of interactive service contents provided by the disc manufacturer through a network connection. This unit has a front and Rear USB connection. The rear one is primarily for the WiFi connection. The USB port can be used to access mp3, or JPEG content on a 1GB or higher memory stick, download BD-Live data, as an input for your LAN or to input firmware upgrades.

Besides the additional content you can access via the internet connectivity, this feature allows you to update the firmware for future functionality and content, which I am optimistic will be forthcoming considering by the time I got the device home they had added Blockbuster and YouTube access. This allows you to increase the life of the device because the firmware updates basically makes this a new device each time features are added, reducing the obsolescence factor!

Note on the connectivity: It does have wireless capability if you do not have a hard wired Ethernet solution. I personally would not use that option if you don't have to for security, reliability. This unit does not come with the proprietary USB wifi adapter in the box. I understand they are between $60 - $80. However, if that is your only option, this player will handle it, although I have not tested that myself. I ended up using an existing Ethernet jack with a splitter (Thanks Cyber Guys) to split my single jack between my PC and the BD-1590, with no loss in bandwidth speed & quality on streaming video, even running both simultaneously.

The unit is a sleek black design with touch type buttons, which makes it semi-child proof, as there is no openings on the surface of the buttons for the inevitable curious dirty toddler fingers. One of the cool things about watching Blu-ray movies is the interactive menus available while watching the movie and additional bonus material on the disks. Most disks pack about 25GB of data, which is what gives you the high quality audio, video, additional features. The visual quality is an obvious improvement, but if you have a quality A/V receiver, the 7.1 surround, DTS, audio is incredible.

One flaw I found is that it does not seem to remember where you left off when you stop watching a movie, turn off the unit and return later to finish the movie. This is a standard feature on most regular DVD players. I'm not sure if it's my ignorance of if it just does not do this. I'm hoping that this can be resolved with a future firmware update.

I can't stress enough about the importance of the internet connectivity feature. Even if you don't realize this now, YOU WANT this feature; especially, considering the price of most new Blu-Ray disks. This feature gives you much more use out of this unit and keeps the unit up to date with new and future options. I use the Netflix steaming, Pandora, YouTube options but do not have an account with Blockbuster. Netflix, Blockbuster and YouTube features are self explanatory, but if you are not familiar with Pandora it is a FREE music steaming site that allows you to create your own "radio stations" and listen to streaming high quality audio. The interface via the BD-1590 is smooth and user friendly and allows you the same interface options as the access via a PC.

I love the picture and sound quality. I cannot access the internet based features, even with the Samsung usb- wireless ethernet adapter, as my house is not hard wired to the location I installed it, and the device is not wireless compatible via that adapter. Looking for a solution, though.

 "BR player" 2009-12-23
By Bodhi (Texas, USA)
After having a few issues with the first few items- Amazon amazing customer support stepped up and made sure I got great service! The player plays DVDs and Blurays quite well. Some of the Bluray movies do have a slower initial load time- once the movie plays however it is not noticeable. I was going to purchase another P2550 as I had purchased and gifted... but as it was no longer available- this is the model before. Although slightly comparible with a few drawbacks to the 2550 model- it is still a great player for the cost. Still no comparison to my PS3 however.

 "Maybe, Maybe Not" 2009-12-21
By M. Chase (MD)
We purchased one in Nov 2008 because we wanted one that could stream Netflix video. It worked fine for about six months and them......? We don't know what happened. Maybe it was a damaged rental Blu-Ray disc or a fault of the player but after about six months it would play a Blu-Ray movie for about 20-30 minutes and then seize up. Now it will only play standard DVD without problems. Any Blu-Ray disc even new ones suffer the 30 minute problem. Still works fine for streaming Netflix or Pandora but as a standalone Blu-Ray player it is useless. Have purchase another brand to replace it in Dec 2009.

"BD-P2500, same as all the other Samsung Blu-Ray players?" 2009-12-19
By Fastlane (Oregon coast)
I bought the PD-P2500 from Amazon less than a year ago. Even though it has been replaced by a new model, it is still under the 12 month warranty. Last night it stopped reading ANY Blu-Ray discs, even ones it had played the night before and previous to that. When I bought the unit, most of these reviews were favorable, but now I see all the problems that have shown up with other units still under warranty. Sometimes after only a month or two or even a few days. Samsung expects me to pay an additional $85.60 to have the unit looked at because the labor warranty was only 3 months. Well there is no labor involved I say, because they have so many reports they don't even have to open the unit to know what the problem is. They should just replace it and hopefully the refurbished unit has the known problem corrected so I can get a year or two use out of it. I have a Samsung 50" plasma and got this player for the compatibility. We bought another Samsung LCD TV and two more Blu-Ray players for Christmas gifts, but now I am considering returning them unopened unless they decide to do the right thing. I have more respect for a company who are honest about problems and don't take their customers for idiots. If they said they found a faulty part that failed after a short time and have since resolved the issue, I might be more inclined to pay for a refurb, but if I only get a few months use out of a refurb too, I might as well put that money toward another brand player and never buy their brand of anything again.

 "Great mid-range BD Player" 2010-01-06
By Steven Brown (Texas)
It doesn't have the nicer feel of more expensive models, but this a very nice player. For the price I don't think you can get a better BD player. Picture quality and sound are both amazing(of course). Player itself is aesthetically pleasing, and matches my other components.

Only beef is you have to plug a thumb drive in the back to get BD-live to work. Kind of cheesy, but it works great once you plug one in.

 "extremely dissappointed" 2010-01-05
By Dissapointed
I'm extremely dissappointed with this Blu-ray player. I've had it just over a year, got it just before Christmas last year mainly due to brand as I also bought the Samsung 52" LCD. Never used it much for blu-rays but what little I did wasn't never really happy as it was always something. Upgraded FW several times. This last update, release date Oct 2009, has completely killed the ability for the machine to play blu-ray disks altogether. it still, and always has, played dvds fine. But I can no longer play a blu-ray and must now send it back to get service. I would recommend another brand and/or model

 "Performed as advertised" 2010-01-02
By Finicky Tom (Buffalo NY)
Bought this DVD player for sale on amazon. Works as advertised. Great picture no problems. Have Samsung TV so compatability is good except when you try to use the DVD remote for the TV you cant manually type in the channel you are searching for you can only use the up/down channel buttons - not a big deal but annoying.

 "The Upgrade of Death" 2009-12-30
By Reviewer (Seminole, FL USA)
I've loved this player for the last year. Until Sunday, I would have given it 4 starts (controls are a bit wonky and it sometimes resizes replay on older discs, which costs a star). Then I got the new Harry Potter movie which requires a firmware upgrade. I followed the instructions TO THE LETTER (there are some minor advantages to being an OCD geek, ya know). Result: Dead Player. I get the pretty "Samsung Blu-Ray" splash screen on the TV and "Loading" on the unit's display. Three days later and every possible correction or fix; result: Dead Player. Nothing on Samsung's site or in their documentation covers the problem specifically, and the solution to seemingly-related problems don't help. As with all other reviewers, Samsung "has never heard of this problem." The cost with shipping of the "under warranty" repair is higher than the cost of a new player. And sorry, Samsung, that player will NOT be one of yours.

Bottom line: This is a great value on a player as long as you never, ever want to watch new-generation discs.

 "Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player" 2009-12-29
By Vol G. Williams (Nine Mile Falls, Washington USA)
This is an excellent player with easy features. Even better because it came with our Samsung 46" HDTV. Amazon does a great job with these deals throwing in blu-ray players with the pruchase of their HDTVs. Thanks Amazon.

I wanted to add a comment about the "Up-Convert" feature of this player. It enhances the quality of regular DVDs to the point that many look just like they were blu-ray disks. I have the The Lord of the Rings - The Motion Picture Trilogy (Platinum Series Special Extended Edition) DVD boxed set and the quality through this machine is phenominal. The character edges and depth are so crisp it appears they could walk out of the screen, almost like 3D. After watching this series multiple times on our old projection TV with a regular DVD player, this was an astounding experience, like it was the first time seeing them in the theater, no....even better!

Warning! Buying a quality LCD HDTV 120HZ or better television with a blu-ray up-convert capable player can have serious consequences. You may find find yourself at work thinking about the movie you saw the night before or the movie you can't wait to get home and watch. You may find there is slightly less motivation to take care of that odd item on the "honey-do-list". You may find there is a new competitive spirit in your home as you, your spouse, and the kids all race to be the first to call dibs on the TV. I find it all well worth the risks.
