Pros: Loads discs quickly. Affordable. Multiple online entertainment options. Can play media through the USB ports.
Cons: Picture good, but not great. I have a 1080P LCDTV using a class2 HDMI cable and the picture isn't the crystal clear quality I was hoping for. I watch 1080i over air broadcasts that look clearer. Still far superior to a DVD, but I expected more out of my Blue Rays.
Netflix is ok. I can stream Netflix wirlessly on my Roku player, and get better quality picture. I have this hard wired and I don't get as high quality, nor do the movies load as fast as they do with the Roku player.
Where's the music? I think it must be a firmware glitch, but when I try to play music off of a flash drive on the USB, nothing happens. I can view my pictures, watch the videos, but I push the button to play the music and nothing happens.
Bottom Line: You get what you pay for. If you're wanting the ultimate HD experience, you'll have to pay for it. If you're dying to get into the HD experienc, but on a budget, this is the best player for the price with some extra features.
Two extra sides: Don't be fool by "Wireless Ready". You have to buy an adapter ($80)for it to operate wirelessly. Which is a total ripoff. My Roku player streams Netflix in HD and wirelessly for $100. Second if you get this and don't know if you want to do Netflix or Blockbuster, it's a no brainer. Netflix by far has more content, at a lower price.

I purchased this BD player to compliment our Samsung HDTV. The two devices worked well with each other in terms of communication, but I found the BD-P1600 to be a very "meh" device - exactly what I should have expected, coming in to the BD player market in the mid-to-bottom-range.
Pros:
- Easy set up and configuration with a Samsung HDTV.
- Blu-ray movies look exceptional.
- Has capability to stream Netflix instantly, but not without additional cabling or purchases (see below).
- Has separate outputs for HDMI and digital audio, which makes a difference if you haven't upgraded your amp to one of the newfangled ones with HDMI inputs.
Cons:
- If you want to connect the P1600 to Netflix straight out of the box, you have to hard-wire it to the Internet. If you want to set it up to stream wirelessly, you need to pay an additional $70 for the sold separately Samsung WIS09ABGN LinkStick Wireless LAN Adapter. I paid $199 for the P1600 - and adding on the $70 for the WiFi dongle would have taken the price right up to within $30 of the PS3 Slim.
- The P1600 tends to skip a lot when trying to move quickly either forward or backward through a movie. I would be trying to get it to go just a little bit in either direction and it would wind up jumping more than I wanted it to. I kept trying to give it the benefit of the doubt, but quickly got frustrated by constantly overshooting what I was trying to get to.
- DVD upscaling leaves a lot to be desired, especially when compared to the PS3 Slim.
I don't know how well it works with the Internet because I didn't want to run a cable all the way to the living room and instead of adding a WiFi dongle for an additional $70 I figured I may as well get the PlayStation 3 120 GB and get a killer gaming system as well. If you are hell-bent on getting a Samsung Blu-ray player spend the extra money and get one of the better ones. This one is too low end to be worth its hefty price.

I've owned this unit for about 16 days and will be on my way to return it. In short, this unit has failed to deliver on Blu-ray disc compatability and upscaling quality. The online streaming features are a plus. For the price there are better units out there that will hassle you less. Originally, I doubted some of the negative reviews on this player but now regret not heeding the advice.
*Online Features*
The Netflix streaming has worked extremely well and is definately a feature I'll be shopping for in the future. The latest firmware update also included Blockbuster On Demand video streaming which allows for the rental and streaming of new releases.
*Video Quality*
I am comparing my viewing experience with this unit to my previous PS3, but am by no means a proponent of Sony - it's simply the only touchstone I have. Firstly, I noticed considerable graininess on the B&W scene from Casino Royale which absolutely did not occur on my previous player. Nextly, on Terminator Salvation, the video stalled out and either skipped forward or went back a chapter on the DVD at no less than 3 points during the movie. I checked for a firmware update and there was one available which resolved the issue, at first. However, what I did notice was that although the picture did not stall anymore at these points a very noticible flicker still occured. Finally, I played the latest Street Fighter movie and similiar to previous issues, the movie completely stalled out near the end. I had to manually back it up and then play the scene over (and if you've seen the movie, having to watch a scene over again is a painful experience). So, out of 3 Blu Ray movies played, all had issues.
*External USB Media*
Additionally, the unit boasts being able to play media from a USB device. My only concern was music so I attached a USB flash drive with MP3s on it. All the files played with an extremely noticable static background. My initial impressions was that this might have been related to file quality. However, the exact same files burned to a DVD and played on the unit sound crystal clear.
*Design*
Regarding the player design, it's quite compact but fairly lack-luster. A major issue to me personally is that the buttons on the player itself are not backlit which makes it difficult to determine which buttons your pressing if the room is dark. They probably should have included a detachable flashlight which would have earned it another star. In addition, when I first started using the player it was fairly quiet when playing. However, just after a few days, I heard a high-pitched hum coming from it. I quickly realized that the player which used to sound like a whisper now sounded like the drill in a dentist's office.
In my book, this is definately a DO NOT BUY.

What an awesome gift this makes! It quickly and easily associates with my Netflix account and I was up and running in only about a minute the first time (after that it's much quicker). You have to add movies to your Netflix instant queue from a computer before you can watch them on the TV, but as you add them, they appear on your screen as choices. (With a nominal delay of course) Movies/Shows stream in a range of qualities, usually older ones or television is in TV quality, then there is near-DVD quality, and some movies you can watch in HD (which looks like 720p, but I can't be sure). All in all, its a great addition to your system! Netflix doesn't bill you anything extra for using this device, assuming your account there has an instant streaming option.
Playback is very nice with Netflix, movies finish buffering in about 10 seconds (on my Cable connection) and play without pausing/skipping. Again, that is dependent on your internet! So if you have a slower DSL connection, you might want to see how well your computer can play Netflix before purchasing a Netflix ready device as the cornerstone of your entertainment system. You can use the arrow keys on the remote to go between 'scenes', though it has to re-buffer any time you do this.
The unit required a firmware upgrade from Samsung, and it was nice enough to let me know that the first time I turned it on. The upgrade is *huge* and took about an hour to download and install. It doesn't need any user input, so I just left it alone when I was finished for the evening.
The AnyNet+ feature is awesome too, if you're using a supporting device (I tested both my Samsung (LN40B640) and Sony Bravia (KDL-32S5100) LCD TVs which had some form of HDMI communication, and they both worked). When you turn on your BD-P1600, if your AnyNet+ ready TV is off, it will turn on, and will automatically switch to the correct input source for you! I haven't tested this feature with an HDMI cable passing through a receiver, so don't count on it if that is how you plan to set your system up.
It plays regular DVDs in great quality, and plays Blu-Ray discs very well! It recognizes Bluray discs much faster than the unit it replaced (An Insignia NS-BRDVD), and it seems like it flies through load screens.
The front bezel flips down when the disc tray is opened, or you can flip it down manually and it will stay down. This reveals a few surface buttons for eject, play/pause, power, skip and stop and a USB port. Keep this in mind when you're positioning the player, it should be lower than the TV so your remote signal doesn't get blocked.
The unit does not come with a Wi-Fi transceiver, but it is supported if you plug in another Samsung USB product.

STAY AWAY FROM SAMSUNG! Just 40 days after buying it, it stopped playing DVDs.... that's a fifteen year old technology... and they didn't get that right. The first time they tried to fix it it came back in worse condition then when I sent it in.
I bought this player in June, it has been broken and in the repair shop since the end of August 2009, it is now December 29 2009 and Samsung has yet to fix my player or send me a new one. This is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable as a customer service model. 4 months and they still can't seem to fix this or replace it.
I will never buy a Samsung product again, I can't waste my time listening to their run-around on why I still don't' have a fixed unit or a new one.
Buy Samsung at your own risk, they do not stand behind their products!
Go with SONY, they are a real electronics company.
