The previous rave reviews here as well as in print have pretty much said it all about this great player.
Living with this unit for the last month I can say that so far it appears that the glitches and slow loading speeds are finally gone from the stand-alone Blu-Ray player. Every disc (and I watch a lot of Blu-ray movies and TV on DVD) has played flawlessly, loaded quickly and offered a state of the art video and audio experience.
You can pop up the set-up screens and tweek all sorts of settings on the fly while the movie is paused or running. Amazing!
While the 2nd and 3rd generations of Panasonic Blu-ray players I owned were very good and offered very fine Blu-ray performance they were still a bit glitchy, still somewhat slow to load and the upconverting DVD performance was not in the same league as this unit. If you have a larger screen and/or sit closer to your display you will be stunned at the how good DVDs look. Especially at 1080p. And, of course Blu-ray will leave you speechless.
Oppo is a small, consumer oriented, high quality on-line brand sold here at Amazon and their own website. You won't find them at Walmart or Best Buy. But, I would urge anyone who is looking to venture into Blu-ray, has a large DVD collection and/or various audio disc collection in any format and is willing to budget at this price point to please check this unit out.

Where to start?!
The remote:
Perfect size. Made for human hands and just the right weight.
Illuminated and just for the right lenght of time.
Ease of use buttons for opening and closing the tray.
'Power' red, and no doubt what it means.
Dimmer present.
All simular functions in the right place.
Multiple ways of interacting with the picture.
A zoom that is not to be believed, and without much loss of picture quality. The sound only button, is great also when you want to spare your TV's lamp.
The player:
Upconversion is great but a bit of a let down, but let's face it even the best can't turn non Blu-ray into Blu-ray... this does come close.
HOT HIGH DEFINITION.
This little magic box is heep-full of goodies!
The varying degrees of slow-motion...forward and backward.
The ability of remembering 5 different DVD restart times.
Volume separate from the TV's so, if necessary, like for a phone call, you can just lower the player, not the entire TV.
Menus that are easy to access, and easy to use. No advanced degree needed here.
The PICTURE:
Wonderful, oh yes, yes, yes.
BUT WHAT ABOUT THE LOAD TIME...Uh, listen closely, very closely,... there isn't any! ... just put in the disc and get ready to run to your neighbors and drag them over to behold...they'll get used to it!
What a giggle that only a few years ago, the only blu-ray was twice the price and now $499. is considered expensive. Take it from someone who has progressed through 3 players so far... was considering the Sony 5000 at $1499. but couldn't find a dealer who had even ever seen the thing work... Turned to Amazon and all those reviews!!!
OH, and let's not forget the wonderful easy to use USB ports. Imagine taking a movie in a little 2 1/2 inch box and pluging it into your player and your player immediately SHOWS the USB on the screen but also gives you immediate access to the contents.
In the future, all of these things will be everywhere and cheaper, but at the moment OPPO, has been and remains the leader of the pack. There HDMI extension "little box" is one imaginative and spectacular piece of equipment!
The only drawback is technical support which I suspect is the janitor on lunch break. Just be persistant!
One more thing.
This is one electronic device that has been placed in packaging designed to protect, protect and, did I say, protect! DON'T THROW IT AWAY!

The Oppo BDP-83 is my first Blu-ray player. I have to agree with all the other reviewers. It is one awesome player. I initially did not want to spend $500 for a Blu-ray player. However, when I saw that Consumer Reports magazine rated this payer as Number 1 and based on all the glowing positive reviews posted about this player, I decided to spend the extra money and get the Oppo. Certainly glad I did. I have a Samsung plasma TV (PN58B860) and I see a significant difference with my standard DVDs with the upconversion. The unit looks really upscale. The remote control is well laid out with large buttons. All in all, I could not be more happy with this player.

When I opened the box and looked inside I said WOW... just the packaging alone was superior to anything I have seen. I wish that I had taken a photo of it. Set-up was a snap. Quality of the video and sound was excellent. I replaced a Samsung BDP-2550 with this unit in my home theater moving the Samsung to the family room. The only thing missing from the OPPO player is Netflix access. Watch them add it next month LOL. If you have a quality home theater set-up it is worth spending the extra money for a Blu-Ray player like OPPO. With all the expensive equipment that I have it did not make sense using a run of the mill Blu-Ray. Glad I got it and will report back on how well it performs under various settings and disk types.
