"Device broken after just 1 year" 2009-12-03
By Jennifer R. Angelini
I purchased this combo unit to record disks from VHS. It worked fine until just after the 1-year warranty period expired! Now when I turn it on, the display says "Hello" but it will not execute any command. After a few minutes it turns itself off. Based on internet research, this is a common problem, but there is not a solution! The JVC representative told me to take it in for repair, which will obviously not be cheap. Do not buy this unit unless you enjoy spending money (quite a bit) for something that is designed to fail!

"Poor Customer Service and Product" 2009-10-26
By Patricia D. Mcanany (Cape May County, NJ USA)
I purchased 2 of these units within the past year. Within a month or so I started having problems and contacted JVC support. I was told to pull the plug and wait and then plug in and reset. This temporarily helped and everytime I had a problem I wrote them and was told the same thing until finally the warranty ran out and they would not respond to my emails. On both units the vcr portion does not work and hasn't worked on one for quite a while. The other one now sounds like 33rpm speed. I would never again purchse JVC due to the poor customer support.

 "It's Okay" 2009-10-13
By J. Rizzardi (Mason, MI USA)
Bought this to have both VHS and DVD capabilities as well as the digital tuner (we only have rabbit ears and no digital TV). I'm not overwhelmed nor underwhelmed with it. It's a solid unit that has done the job so far (8 months). I still tape mostly on VHS though getting used to DVD more and more except you have to "Finalize" the DVD before playing on another unit. This takes several minutes and is a minor inconvenience. I purchased the special JVC-RW DVD's and they have worked every time with no problems. Really don't like the remote much. Keys too small and I'm STILL getting used to where things are. Also, the FF function for DVD's is not the step-up that I like...not sure the threshholds on each but it seems like 2x, 4x, 6x, 8x then all of a sudden 100x. Very annoying and a major problem in my book.

"basics are good but with kinks" 2009-10-08
By Sergey Babkin (New Jersey, USA)
I've had this DVD/VCR combo for a little over a year now. The reason why I remembered to write the review now is that the DVD tray went crazy just a couple of weeks after the warranty ended. And not like I used the DVD side of it that much. Instead of fully opening, the tray would just peek out a little bit. Well, it can be pulled out further by hand but I don't know how long will it last like that.

Aside from the tray issue, it works, and works pretty good. The HDTV tuner is very good, way better than in the RCA converter. It's also pretty good at reading the DVDs that are not quite readable. Better than the drive in Philips 642 though not as good as in my computer. When Philips starts breaking up the video stream, JVS still shows it fine. The problem is that when the picture freezes in JVC, it stays this way forever, everything just hangs. Philips on the other hand skips the damaged part and continues playing after a little while. (And of course Philips has a crack to ignore the country code, no such luck for JVC).

Another issue is with ergonomics. Everything is done through painful multi-layer menus. The VCR part seems to be done as an after-thought, it misses even such simple features as search by index.

 "Not happy" 2009-09-30
By Marty Forman (Littleton, CO USA)
I purchased this unit June '09 and it quickly had a problem with recording and it turning off on it's own. I brought it in for repairs and it was in the shop for about two months . They said they couldn't fix it and would send it in to JVC. I started calling JVC and didn't get a good answer about my problem. I really got the run around. After many attempts to fix the problem, and many hours spent of my time they finally agreed to send me my money back. I would not recommend this product or any other JVC product.
