Sharp AQUOS BD-HP22U 1080p Blu-ray Disc PlayerI downloaded latest software...However, I wasn't able to play the first three blu rays. DVD worked with no problem. Sharp Tech support confirmed the correct software was installed and then offered me a shipping label to have it sent back and "fixed". No way!!! This was brand new...and I wasn't going to deal with another Sharp Blu Ray dud (Lemon). I didn't a little research and discovered I was not alone. I then demanded a full refund from the store Best B#y. I then purchased a Sony..same price range. All three of the same blu ray movies played without a problem on the Sony.

I got this product the other day. I like it so far. While it is not as fast as my PS3 which I use as my main Blu-Ray player. It gets the job done as second unit. I got mine used for less than a 100 bucks, so I can say that I was not expecting much from this player.

I've gone through two of these players, having returned the first one thinking it was a dud. Unfortunately the series is just cheap quality.
The first was worst, refusing to play half of the Blu-rays I put in there. It would just sit there with a black screen for 10 minutes. Reloading the disc made no difference. Regular DVDs always worked fine.
Returned that set, got another. Worked better, but this HP-16U still had issues from time to time. This one would often get a "bad load" ... artifacting, seizing, and just basically not playing. I could often get it to work by loading/reloading, powering on and off.
And why does the tray take up to 25 seconds to open? Ridiculous.
Which is a shame, because picture and sound were quite good when it worked.
After a couple of months, I gave up. Took this one back to Costco, got a Sony instead.

Got my first blu-ray dvd player in August. It was a Sharp HP16U. Great picture and fantastic sound, but it does not run some of the newer blu-ray dvds. Sharp support seems to not have released a firmware download, so I'm stuck with dvds I can't play and am worried about any new blu-ray dvds I might buy in the future. I may need to box it up and send it back, since I have 11 months left on the warranty. I suggest you stay clear of the HP16U.

Sharp doesn't even list this orphan model on their web site. And judging by their support area they don't pay any attention to these products. Presumably they are OEM (meaning they slap their label on some unknown manufacturer's work). This machine is absolute junk. The front panel buttons are non-responsive. You have to physically unplug the unit to force it to power down (not easy when the cords are behind equipment). I've updated the firmware 2x since I've had the unit and it still won't play the most recent discs. I'm an electronic engineer and it took me an hour to do the update, I'd imagine most consumers would have to spend a hundred dollars to ship it off for service. I honestly don't know if any other vendors have better equipment. Apple's Steve Jobs once said that Blu-Ray was a "world of hurt." I think I see what he was referring to. The standards for this platform seem to be a moving target. Even discs that work can take 15 minutes to "boot up." Even the worst DVD is up and running in a minute. Don't buy Sharp and proceed carefully if you buy another brand. Be sure you can take the unit back with a full refund. Try renting discs before you buy any.
