This item can be found for a steep discount(less than 475 usd). The quality and 5 year parts and labor warranty are the advantages of paying more than the minimum to get blue ray tech. Great engineering does not come cheap and Sony is the best engineering value in electronics for my money.

First of all, let me say the video output of the S2000ES is first rate. However, for the price, it should be. It does a great job on both Blu-Ray and standard DVD's. I did, however, have to do a firm-ware update to get it to run some of the new Java menus. It is a slow machine both on boot-up and disc loading. Having said all of this, I still would have given it five stars. Here is the problem.

It does not decode DTS-Master Audio. They give you the impression that it does in the advertisements. The manual is written in such a vague way that you really can't tell what it can decode internally and send out over the analog connectors. Also, what it will send bit-stream over the HDMI connector. I had to call the company and even they had to do some research and get back to me. There is NO EXCUSE for this type of misleading information. When you buy the top of the line, you should get top of the line performance.

The picture quality of this player is outstanding. However, on first purchase it had some distortion in the sound of one channel, wouldn't load discs on occasion, and very slow. We sent it back, got it serviced.



We got the machine back and a couple months later it completely quit working. We returned it again and Sony sent us a refurbished unit. This one is starting to skip now when playing CDs.



Oh Well, Guess we'll try again. It's only a $1300 machine. :)

I've got one major beef with this machine, and that is I T I S S O S L O W. Takes forever to power up or to load a disk. I've also had some curious lock-ups while attempting to navigate through disk menus (I suspect that I may not have been patient enough to let the player catch up before issuing another command.) I'm going to take a deep breath and install the latest firmware in hopes of improvement, but were I shopping today I would look for a more recent model rather than try to play catch-up with the firmware versions.

I received this as a gift last Christmas, and am using it with a 50" Panasonic LCD TV (can't remember model number at the moment). One of the first things I noticed about this unit was how long it takes to load a disc. The fastest I've ever seen it load with any kind of disc is about a minute. For Blu-Ray discs with more elaborate menus and such, it can take 3 or 4 minutes to load the menu. I also found out within a couple of weeks of owning it that the player does not support either Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD Master audio, only Dolby Digital plus. A bit of a disappointment, to say the least. Also, performance on standard DVD's is no better than any $30 player you can get at Best Buy. My $200 Oppo blows it away for standard DVD's. Another annoying thing about the player is that, if you hit stop while watching a movie (to answer the phone, for example) it does not save your place in the movie so when you go back, you have to wait 3 or 4 more minutes for the menu to load, then try to find where you were in the movie. Very poor design. I tried several times to download and update the Firmware, hoping it would help with some of these problems, but Sony's web site always tells me "the page can not be displayed" when I try to download this particular firmware. E-mailed their support, and they were not at all helpful. Blu-Ray movies DO look great (once you buy your own HDMI Cable which, for some reason, is not included) but the other issues of this player make it a poor buy.

A very big disappointment. On the box, you see 1080 Full HD printed all over it. There is one small line which says, "HDMI capable HDTV with 1080p display required, Image quality and upscaling results will very." I have a 1080 HD Projector, but it does not have an HDMI input. No problem I thought. I can use the component output jacks on the Sony BDP-s300. I connected everything and turned it on and when the movie finally started to play, my projector told me that I was only getting a 480i picture from the Sony Box. After reading through the instruction manual, I learned that the player can only produce a full 1080 HD signal from the HDMI output. I called Sony Customer Support and asked if there was a way to work-around this problem using some kind of special cable. They informed me there was no special cable. If I wanted a 1080i picture, I would have to buy a new TV. I told them my TIVO Series 3 Hi-Def recorder could produce a 1080 picture using component video output. I told Sony I would take the player back for a refund. I am very disappointed that Sony did not make a better effort in warning the buyer about the limitations of this player with some types of HDTV's.

I purchased the BDP S300 after buying a 52" XBR4. It does have some minor issues, but nothing I could not live with. Overall I was happy with the player.

The main problem came when I tried to update the Firmware that Sony has available on their website.

I had the thing for about a month when I downloaded the Firmware update from Sony's website. The 3.8 version froze up my player. I got the message "Incomplete, Need Disc". I could not shut it off, or eject the disc. This was after I got the message that the download was successful.

I fortunately purchased the item from Circuit City who was wonderful! I was 4 days over their 30 day return policy. The let me exchange it for a new one. I got home, and attempted to download a version of the 3.7 Firware that I knew worked since I had upgraded the old plaer. The same thing happened again!!!! I contacted Sony's support, who were not helpful. They wanted me to pay to have it shipped to PA for repairs. After I spent $4000 on a T.V., and $400 on the stupid player. I feel that this is a slap in the face by Sony. Especially when I have been loyal to Sony for 20+ years!

I returned this second player. Like a fool, I will probably get screwed over by Sony again with the new player.

I asked the Sony rep. to send me the upgrade disc from them rather than downloading it from the internet. He assured me that this issue will not happen again.

If this freezes up with the disc that Sony sends me directly, I am returning the player and going with another company!!!



BE VERY CAUTIOUS WHEN PURCHASING A BD PLAER!!!!!



As another reviewer mentioned. The technology is too new at this time. Spend the money on the extended warranty from the store, NOT SONY. They will screw you over.

I purchased this unit 3 yrs ago for $250.00. Orig: $1,000.00. I had heard about and read about all the issues that plagued this player. I have enjoyed pristine blu ray video and audio, and outstanding upconversion with this unit. For some reason, about a year ago I got the itch to replace with something better, maybe with DTS-Master audio. I have tried and tried many players, hoping to top the performance of this unit, but it just isn't there. Oppo Bdp-83 video was a tad better but not the audio. Pioneer Bdp-05fd, had average video and audio and poor upconversion. My point is I still go back to my Sony Bdp-s1 everytime and I always say that it is simply the best. I will wait,read, research, but I am sticking with Sony when it comes to blu ray. Don't get me wrong, I have tried the lower end Sony players, 300 series, 500 series, etc. None of them compare to the Bdp-s1. I keep up with all the firmware upgrades by down loading, and burning to a disc, and have zero ploblems watching any disc.

Bought this unit for two reasons because it was on sale and it was Sony. While the Picture is flawless and the sound is great, it doesn't always work as it should.

I have had problems with this unit not reading some Blu-ray movies. I thought since it was a brand new movie maybe the movie was defective so I returened it to the store and got another new one. When I put it in it did the exact same thing. So I went and tried the movie in a friends Blu-ray player and it worked just fine, but still wouldn't work in the Sony. Along with that it has locked up several times on us while watching a movie. I then had to reboot the player and then find where I was in the movie again.

Just a post to say that people must realize there are many people who are unhappy with the demise of hd-dvd, so much so that they are crowind the blu-ray reviews and threads with terrible reviews, when they probably have never even owned a blu-ray player. I owned this model and it played blu-ray discs perfectly. If you're in the market for a play, though, buy a newer model. This is the first blu-ray player and there are many features it lacked due to it being released so early on in the format. Just remember, usually the terrible reviews are from angry hd-dvd fanboys whose format died a miserable death, as well it should have because Blu-ray holds more on a disc (20gb), has much better bitrate possibilities and now has the support of every major movie studio. Blu-ray is simply the high definition dvd.

I'd like to say that this is a fantastic Blu-Ray DVD player, but I can only say that it's good. This is because I faught almost a year with it till the new firmware (Java) update came out. Before the update, you didn't know from one day to the next if a DVD (Blu-Ray or standard) would play or what features (fast forward, skip, Top Menu etc.) would work on any given DVD - what worked one day would not work the next. Some days it would lock up so that only unplugging the unit could reset it. Once the update, which is dead simple to do, was done it worked flawlessly. You must have the latest firmware for this thing to work!!! However, even now it's slow - it has to boot up much like a PC and then movies have to "Load". But once it's going, everything works and the picture and sound out of a Blu-Ray DVD is far superior. It's worth the wait and maybe there will be another update in the future to speed things up.

Another reviewer provided a very good comparison of the Sony BDP-BX1 and BDP-S350 models so I will not repeat. Instead, I will provide a simple (NOT comprehensive) comparison of the BX1, BX2 and S360 models. BX1 and BX2 are Costco and Sam's Club model labels for the S350 and S360 models sold elsewhere, respectively. Inside the machine, the electronics are of the same grade/quality whether the unit is sold at Costco/SC or elsewhere.



Remote Control:

Remote control for BX1 or BX2 has back-lit/light button but remote for S350 or S360 doesn't. Remote control for BX1 or S350 has open/close, scene search, clear, mute, and channel +/- buttons but remote control for BX2 or S360 doesn't. Therefore, remote for BX1 has more buttons than BX2, S350 and S360. However, some folks may not need the extra buttons anyway.



Player Unit:

BX1 or S350 unit has play,stop and pause buttons in the front but the pause button is deleted in the BX2 or S360 unit. Also, BX1 or S350 unit has S-Video connector in the back but the BX2 or S360 doesn't have this connector. For most people, this is probably not an issue at all but I personally like the S-Video optional output for my old TV in another room while the HDTV in the living room is fed by an HDMI cable.



Video and Audio:

AV performance of the BX1 or S350 (with software version 020 or later) is essentially the same as that for the BX2 or S360. In my estimation, all 4 models provide very good to excellent Video/Audio performance. The BX2 or S360 are slightly lighter (in weight) and cheaper (in cost) than BX1 or S350 because some of the ("non-essential") features/circuits were removed to reduce manufacturing cost.

I tried a cleaning disk, that didn't help. I'll use it for a normal DVD player, & get a better unit for the main home theatre. Oh well...

Puchased a BDP-BX1 at Costco,,,,I works great with DVDs but not with Blu Ray Discs...After an hour on the phone with Sony (in the Carribean) and a bunch of useless experiments the tech rep tells me I don't have the correct firmware and they need to send a disc to me that will take 7-10 business days and cannot be expedited. OK I wait. The disc arrives with a three page instruction, but loads easily. I go to rent three new Blu-Rays and get the family together...they still don't work smoothly...barely viewable with blips in video and audio throughout. Another call to Sony suggests I try swapping swap ends of the HDMI cable??? or call back their weekday only tech support ...The unit is going back...(PS. My local Blockbuster store says this is common...as the Blu-Ray specs vary and people have to swap BR for DVD when the BR discs don't work on their specific unit.) Sony's unit is not yet ready for prime time.

I have owned this player about a month and has been getting my use out of it. I have a Toshiba HDTV and a 5.1 pioneer system. I have purchase some blu ray movies and they look fantastic. But what really blows me away is that this player converts regular DVD's like a charm. It is like looking at a movie you seen so many times before for the first time. The whole picture looks so different and you will be like, I never noticed that scene before. This player has put me in movie heaven.But just reminder it will not play or convert regular HD DVD's.

I originally purchased a Memorex Blu Ray Player (MVBD-2510) since I figured all players were basically the same. Boy, was I wrong. The Memorex did an okay job of playing movies, but the startup time was MISERABLE and the menu system was extremely unresponsive and frustrating. Plus, the firmware update process was atrocious--I wasted seven CD-Rs trying to update it, before getting lucky and finding a way to get the player to accept the disc. Anyway, I finally cut my losses, sold the Memorex, and replaced the player with this one instead. What a difference.



This player boots up in the same amount of time as a typical DVD player--about five seconds from pressing eject to seeing the tray fully opened. It has a simple, intuitive menu system based on the PS3's XMB system. Discs load up fast--the speeds are almost as good as PS3, the undisputed king of fast loading times. Picture and sound quality is, of course, excellent--it's a Sony, you really should expect no less from the inventors of the Blu-ray format :) Really, there's nothing to complain about. Given the small price difference between the Memorex model and this one, I don't know why I waited this long to switch.



The only quibble I can think of is that you can't use a USB flash drive to update the firmware--you need to burn a CD-R. Not a big deal, especially since you can do it via the network if you can run Ethernet from your router/modem to the Blu-ray player, or don't mind spending a few extra bucks for a wireless router in your entertainment center.



Anyway, this is apparently the same thing as a Sony BDP-S350 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player except for slightly less fancy audio decoding, and a backlit remote. I wouldn't sweat the audio decoding thing--if you have a sound system good enough to hear the difference, you'll be able to decode the HD formats in the receiver itself. And the backlit remote is cool. So buy either one and enjoy it. Or, go the extra mile and get a PlayStation 3 80GB if money is no object.

I'm a Sony fanboi, but this is the weakest Sony product in over a decade and there's no reason for it. For the want of a horse a kingdom is lost... Sorry.



It plays disks wonderfully but there's no reason to have a changer so limited. Gracenote supplies disk information but it's just not sufficient unless you are only watching mainstream movies. If you watch indies or special-interest movies, you have to enter the information by the remote, which is data-entry hell. For over a decade Sony has had a keyboard input. This is a step back from the 400-DVD player. And the ES non-HDMI player before that. And the 300 DVD player. And the 200 CD player... All of which I've owned and all of which were more user friendly.



If iTunes had the ability to enter DVD information, that would be okay. Pop the DVD into my Mac, label it, and then into the changer. I'll do data-entry hell for Blu-ray. It would be an extra step but it would be a service to the community. It's simple with a CD to enter information with iTunes, but the latest iTunes doesn't let you do it with a DVD. There is I think an SDK [...] to let you write a program to do it, but my CS degree is 30 years out of date, and why should I have to? A keyboard input is simply not that hard to do.



Also it crashes. I don't use it that much for the above reasons (I bought one the used market another 400-DVD changer AFTER I bought this) but perhaps a quarter of the time I have to turn it off because it's stuck. I don't have to unplug it, or even lever myself out of the chair--the remote's power button will do it. But it's a problem. A software update can fix this though. But it can't fix the lack of a keyboard input.



The specs are wonderful. It has a lovely interface, like the latest Sony receivers (which I have and love). But the lack of a keyboard input means that I'd suggest passing on this unless you do nothing but mainstream movies.



This is the first Sony product that I regret having bought.

The Sony "mega changer" is a unique product, capable of storing a medium-sized disc collection in a single, convenient device.



A wide range of disc types are supported in addition to Blu-ray, including conventional DVDs and audio CDs. Note that DVD-Audio, HD-DVD and SACD are *not* supported.



The build quality is first rate, typical of a Sony "ES" product. It weighs over 30 pounds and seems like it's built to last a while. It hooks up easily using a single HDMI cable (assuming what you're connecting to accepts this type of input). If you're using Sony gear, you can control the "mega changer" using a common remote and Sony's "Bravia Sync" protocol. For older equipment, there are 2 and 7 channel analog outputs, as well as digital coax. If you use high-end AV control system (such as Crestron), there are RS-232 inputs as well. The 5-year warranty is also a good touch.



In terms of sound and picture quality, I'd rate it as excellent. I have a variety of other high-end disc players, and in no case could I see or hear differences on the Sony. DVDs are upscaled for better performance, and the unit supports 24p True Cinema, BD-Live and so on. It supports all the latest surround audio formats and video features, and Sony has a built-in network connection supporting easy firmware updating. While I haven't seen a specific commitment from Sony to support future standards, at least the infrastructure is there if they choose to do so.



The unit also features a built-in Ethernet port that can connect to the Gracenote service to retrieve album art and disc cover graphics. This is a nice touch, saving you from having to manually enter disc information most of the time. Unfortunately, the graphics are sometimes low resolution and on a small display, they can be difficult to see clearly. Also, on prior generations of this product, Sony included a way to connect a computer keyboard so you could easily edit disc information. This feature has been dropped on the BDP-CX7000ES...so long as you're Ethernet connected and storing discs that can be found in the Gracenote service, this isn't a big deal - but if (for instance) you tend to burn your own discs and want to edit titles, it can be quite a chore doing it without a keyboard. Some complain about the lack of WiFi, but you can always use a wireless Ethernet bridge to eliminate the need for any cables (this is how I have mine connected, and it works fine).



Finding discs is always a challenge with units like this, and so Sony provides a variety of ways your collection can be indexed. It's possible to search by title, genre, rating - even director and cast member.



The unit can be somewhat slow loading and unloading discs, which I guess is a function of the size of the carousel. It can take 30 seconds to unload a disc, spin the unit to the desired slot, then load the chosen disc.



There's also a slot that can be used to play a single disc without loading it into the unit. This is a good idea, but as I've kept my single disc player connected to my system, I don't use the Sony for this type of disc. Similarly, there's a USB port for connecting various types of media to the unit (for instance, special BD-Live content, or photos, etc). So far, I haven't found a compelling use of this feature since it duplicates capabilities I have on other devices.



One problem I've had with the unit is that it seems sensitive to being moved - some of the discs seemed to move out of their slots just by sliding the device on its shelf. It seems important to not move the unit once its loaded with discs.



Although this is a fine unit overall, there are a few other areas that could use improvement:



1. WiFi should be built-in...I shouldn't need to buy an outboard Ethernet bridge to connect wirelessly.



2. The Gracenote service is still immature, mislabling about 10-20% of all discs.



3. Would be nice to have built-in support for Amazon's video on demand (or Netflix).



4. Takes a long time to setup initially if you have lots of discs. A wireless keyboard would be a big help.



5. The overall software interface is a bit clumsy...would be nice if it was easier to simply connect the device (over that USB channel?) to a Windows Media Center or iTunes.



6. It runs a bit hot in an enclosed cabinet and tends to generate audible fan noise.



7. Would be nice to have a way to link multiple units for those having more than 400 discs. While you can certainly connect multiple units to your system, each acts independently - without a coordinated index, you need to remember which discs are in which player.



Still, in spite of these shortcomings, I think this is a great product and I give it a solid four stars. It would probably be five stars for picture and sound quality, five stars for construction quality, and three stars for usability and software design.
